Happ Inn Bar and Grill Review - Getting Ready for National Fried Chicken Day

My husband and I had the opportunity of enjoying the famous Happ Inn Bar and Grill fried chicken ahead of July 6 when the will celebrate National Fried Chicken Day with all-you-can-eat General Happ’s Fried Chicken for $17.95 and12-piece carry out Fried Chicken Meal Deal for $29.95 (regular price $39.95). What a deal.  Happ Inn Bar and Grill is a great deal, a comfortable neighborhood restaurant, easy to get to, reasonable prices, with great food.

Approaching Happ Inn Bar & Grill

On a lovely Saturday evening we were welcomed for dinner and seated at a comfortable booth.  The décor is simple and charming as well as uplifting.  Located at 305 Happ Road in Northfield, the walls are decorated with large posters that have variations of HAPP, i.e., “HAPP-y”, “HAPPiness”, etc. The ambiance is so pleasant.  The restaurant is divided so that each room feels cozy; the porch, the bar, the main dining room and two private rooms, one for 30 guests and another for up to one hundred guests.

The main dining room

I have personally found Happ Inn Bar & Grill to be perfect for all occasions from a casual meal any time of the day, to a place to bring out of town visitors.  Carlos Nieto opened The Happ Inn about nine years ago after 30 years as a restaurateur in Highland Park.  Here he has created a sense of community where he welcomes every customer as if they were a member of his own family.  You can observe Carlos greeting guests and making sure things are running smoothly.

Chef Freddy Sanchez, General Manager, T.J. Bachmeyer, and Owner, Carlos Nieto - "Three Muskateers"

The Happ Inn boasts head chef Freddy Sanchez , who brings his culinary sensibility and lifelong passion for great food to the table with each plate. The resulting eclectic menu offers a variety of comfort food including juicy burgers, wood-fired flatbreads, Mexican specialties, the “world famous” General Happ’s Fried Chicken and healthy salads. The restaurant also features many delicious gluten-free options. I am always grateful for the vegetarian, gluten-free options.  Speaking with Freddy, he said he is influenced by Italian and Mexican foods and he is appreciative that Carlos gives him “free reign”.  The results of his endeavors are spectacular.

The other individual who keeps everything moving well is general manager, T.J. Bachmeyer, though often behind the scenes, he oversees all.

Our pleasant, efficient server, Matthew Korbakes

Our server, Matthew, greeted us once we were seated in a comfortable and quiet booth in the main dining room.  We proceeded to order some our favorite items from the extensive, varied menu.

Yellow Gazpacho Soup was available.  Lucky for us because it is rich, clean tasting, tangy and slightly chewy.  We both love this dish.

We also love the guacamole and think it ranks with the best we have had.  It is a bit chunky, mildly flavored with just a little kick.  It is not too spicy and not too mild, but, just right. We also ordered dipping vegetables which were fresh and crunchy, in addition to the chips which are made fresh each day.

My husband was curious about the fried chicken and he was not disappointed. The accompanying cole slaw and fries were great but the chicken was outstanding.  From Harrison farms, prepared in a pressure cooker, the generous portion of white meat was juicy and succulent and perfectly flavored.

How could we go wrong with Homer’s ice cream for dessert?  These flavors were wonderful, cappuccino chocolate chip was amazing, the strawberry balsamic burst with flavor and the vanilla was just as good as can be.

Another appeal of this restaurant is the extensive list of quality wines and beers, which change with the seasons.

The bar

If you have never heard of Fried Chicken Day before, you have now and on July 6th- head to Happ Inn Bar & Grill for a real treat.  But don’t limit your visit to that day; it is a great place anytime.
