Yellow Moon Review – An Exciting Ramble Through Scotland

Take four chairs, four excellent actors, just the right lighting and sound, in a very small space, and what do you get?  “Yellow Moon”, a wonderful theater adventure written by David Greig and directed by Associate Artistic Director Stuart Carden now playing at Writer’s Theatre, Books on Vernon location

Stuart Carden comments, “Playwright David Greig is an exuberant and masterful storyteller who articulates the twists and turns of his jaw-dropping narrative with some of the most inventive, muscular, and lyrical language I've read by a contemporary playwright.  Little known in the U.S. but celebrated in the U.K. it is a distinct honor to be the first American company to produce Yellow Moon and introduce, within the intense intimacy of our bookstore space, this exciting playwright's inventive and energetic style of theatre to our audience.”

Leila and Lee are lost teens who are a seemingly unlikely pair. They set off on a wild ramble across the Scottish highlands in search of Lee’s father and we learn about this in a series of lyrical narratives that bring the audience into the action. Along the way some of the inner turmoil of each of the individuals is revealed. The four actors each play multiple roles seamlessly and expertly.

Having lived in Scotland for a year, I loved the sound of the Scottish accents (which I loved when I lived there) and recognized many of the locations mentioned, making the action quite real to me.  The rhythm of the language and structure of the play kept me glued to my seat.  The play was well suited to the small space and the intimacy gave a greater intensity to the performance.  It is a great theater experience that you are sure to enjoy.

The cast includes: Ashleigh LaThrop (Leila), John Lister (Billy/Frank), Josh Salt (Lee) and Karen Janes Woditsch (Jenni/Holly).

The creative team includes: Kevin Depinet (Scenic Design), Rachel Anne Healy (Costumes), Nick Heggestad (Props), Lee Fiskness (Lighting), Christopher Kriz (Original Music and Sound) and Eva Breneman (Dialect Coach). Becky Pechter is the Stage Manager.
