Ports are blended wines

This year has so far proved to be yet another when Quinta Nova’s wines were selected in prestigious blind wine-tastings as “bests”.

The wines are stored and aged in oak barrels

Note the cork ceilings that help control temperatures naturally and without using energy for heating or cooling

At “Essência do Vinho", the refereed show in Porto with over 3000 wines from 350 national and foreign producers, Quinta Nova’s Mirabilis Grande Reserva White 2014 made it to the top three.

At the “Revista de Vinhos” competition two Quinta Nova wines were selected as bests—“ Vintage Port 2013” and “Mirabilis Grande Reserva Red 2013 – and three others for the best buy category where price is matched to quality “Pomares White 2014, Porto Late Bottled Vintage 2009 and Clã Moscatel Douro.”

While wine making is an ancient art, today it does use state-of-the-art automation

That you can sip these wines in the tasting room at the conclusion of your tour is obviously a big draw.   Better, you can pair them with tapas created by the chef of Quinta Nova’s standout Conceitus Restaurant.  (Read our full review of Conceitus Restaurant here.)

The Quinta Nova Winery House hotel—only 11 rooms—is quite a luxurious place to stay in Douro Valley.  (Click here to read our full review --  “Douro Valley’s Quinta Nova Winery House Review - Bucolic Luxury”.)

All this said, it is the history of these vineyards that grabs this reviewer most.

Look for the historic markers from 1758 that show the borders of the world’s first officially designated wine producing area, Pombal Marker on the self-guided Quinta Nova Walking Trail map.

In Fall, 2016 Quinta Nova’s cellars will open a small museum to showcase many of the antique artifacts showing wine-making in days gone by.  Some of these are in the tasting room now.
