5 Ways to Monitor Your Health between Doctor Visits

Appointments with the doctor should always be maintained, regardless of a busy schedule. Regular health check-ups are the first and foremost step towards prevention and aggravation of any ailments.

However, taking proper care of your body is an everyday process. Being observant and understanding your body functionalities can make it easier to identify any malfunction.

Some tips below will help anyone monitor their health to get the most out of the next doctor’s appointment.

1. Keep Track of BMI

BMI is Body Mass Index, and it is an essential standard for calculating physical fitness. It can easily be calculated using the simple formula:

For a healthy adult, BMI should be between 18.5 and 25. BMI less than 18.5 is underweight and above 30 is considered obese. Obesity is a symptom of other mental and physical illnesses.

A BMI value lower than 18.5 might be an indication of severe malnutrition. Sometimes, it can also be caused by even more serious and potentially life-threatening diseases such as anorexia and bulimia.

So, regular measurement of BMI is a good step towards the assessment of one’s physical health.

2. Pay attention to pain

Any unwarranted pain can be the symptom of something more. Taking note of pain and the cause of the pain can help your doctor make a more accurate diagnosis. For example, sudden stomach aches can be an indication of ulcers.

Also, joint pains are early signs of cartilage erosion and osteoporosis. The earlier the detection, the better will be the chances of avoiding any serious damage to mobility, strength, and range of motion of the joints.

It can also indicate a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet. Pain can help you identify the blood tests that need to be performed for your doctor to get a clearer picture of the problem.

3. Monitor blood pressure

Using a blood pressure monitor for periodic checking of blood pressure is necessary for early detection of hypertension. High blood pressure or hypertension has a severe impact on the heart and kidneys.

It also increases chances of strokes and ischemic attacks. Similarly, low blood pressure can be the reason behind lethargy, undue exhaustion, and dizziness.

Modern sphygmomanometers are digital and no longer have the hassles of a manual one. Blood pressure should be optimally maintained at110/75 mmHg, while at rest. It must not exceed 120/80 mm Hg for an adult above the age of 20.

A doctor’s advice is compulsory for medication, lifestyle and dietary changes that should be incorporated for lowering blood pressure.

4. Note the color of urine and stool

Urine should be clear and straw-colored. There should not be present any discharge or clumps. If the color is regularly dark or the urine smells too strong, then it is advisable to get an opinion of the doctor, immediately.

Stool should not be black. Jet black stool indicates loss of blood during defecation. It is the primary indicator of stomach ulcers, colon cancer, and bad food habits, in general.

Also, too frequent urination can be a symptom for UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) or diabetes (high blood sugar). So, an immediate doctor’s appointment should be made to for proper investigations.

5. Keep track of hair loss

Excessive hair loss in August (more than 150 hairs a day) can be due to a variety of reasons. Lowered blood ferritin levels (ferritin is the measure of the stored iron in the body) and hypothyroidism (lowered level of the thyroid hormone) are some of the main causes. For women, PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) can also be a trigger for hair fall.

In such cases, hormone levels in blood and serum ferritin levels have to be tested. A doctor’s opinion is mandatory for further treatment.
