Timeout Chicago’s 2nd Annual Treat Yo’ Self Review - A Festival Too Sweet For Words

Residents of Chicago and beyond flocked to Time Out Chicago’s 2nd Annual Treat Yo’ Self, a dessert tasting event, on Sunday, March 5th, 2017 at Architectural Artifacts (4325 N Ravenswood Avenue), a large, roomy loft event space in Ravenswood. Guests sampled sweets and treats from the city’s best bakeries, restaurants and ice cream shops, sampling some of their most popular desserts and delectable specialties, from decadent pies to mouth-watering milkshakes.

Participants included Ravenswood’s new Cookie Spin, Bake Chicago, Julius Meinl, Osteria Langhe, Fairmont Chicago, and Katherine Anne Confections. Besides a huge sugar rush, people could get chair massages from the Lisa App, psychic readings from Chicago Spiritual Boutique, and hair braiding by Mixed Co. Salon.

There were three sessions to choose from for the event: 11:30am–1:30pm, 2:00–4:00pm, 4:30–6:30pm. Tickets were $25 and included dessert tasting from all the participating restaurants, one complimentary beer provided by DryHop Brewers or Corridor Brewing & Provisions, one signature cocktail provided by KOVAL Distillery, chair massages from the LISA App, and the psychic readings from Chicago’s Spiritual Boutique. Guests were also greeted by standing tables with candy cane balloons, candy coloring sheets, Dum Dums lollipops, and the classic boardgame Candy Land! Inside, a DJ was spinning smooth sounding tunes.

My friend and I had the best time wondering from tasting station to tasting station! The event definitely satisfied my huge sweet tooth! We tried a marvelous plethora of sweets from candy maker, Katherine Ann’s chocolate bar, which consisted of delicious sea salt hot chocolate, toppings such as chocolate sprinkles and glazed nuts, various mouthwatering homemade caramels and fluffy marshmallow, chocolate truffles (lemon poppy seed, citrus and rosemary sea salt caramels, and exotic whipped creams (bourbon, vanilla bean and lavender). Fairmont Chicago’s Millennium Park Restaurant also stunned with a delectable hummingbird cake (banana and caramel with cinnamon cream cheese frosting and banana slices). Italian restaurant, Osteria Langhe, also impressed with a creamy panna cotta with house vanilla pudding, chocolate, hazelnuts and raspberries.

Other fantastic highlights offered at Treat Yo’ Self were Bake Chicago’s chocolate ship cookie cake which was a glorious simplistic recipe of butter, eggs, semi-sweet chocolate, flour and brown sugar, and Julius Meinl Coffee Bar and Patisserie’s opera torte (almond cake soaked with espresso syrup, dark chocolate ganache, espresso buttercream, and chocolate mirror glaze). The only company we both felt was not as impressive was Cookie Spin. I was originally excited about this one, because it is right in my Ravenswood neighborhood. However, the cookie sundae failed to impress. It lacked originality and flavor.

Another success I noticed about the 2017 Treat ‘Yo Self is that the loft location was much more open and spread out than last years at Fulton Market. The event is always crowded, and it was much easier to navigate the dessert spots with more room.

At the end, our stomachs were brimming with sugar and sweets, and we were equally glad that we had brought baggies to smuggle out extra samples! (On our way out we also participated in a fun candy photo shoot with inflatable cupcakes!) For any chocoholic or sweets lover, make sure you attend next years 3rd Annual Time Out Chicago Treat Yo’ Self!
