27-year-old Miss USA 2002 has now taken on the role of Ambassador for Christian Children's Fund aka Child Fund. A formerly sponsored child, herself, actress Shauntay Hinton, grew up knowing what it was like to have someone who really cared. "I have a personal connection to these kids because of what I've been through, myself."
Watching TV while she was younger, she was enthralled with Access Hollywood and was determined to somehow get on there. She wanted to be on their red carpet. "I hit the ground running." It was that desire which motivated her to run for Miss District of Columbia. She then ran and won Miss USA -- the second African American woman to do so.
Shauntay likes to roll up her sleeves and get involved with a variety of projects.
Also an ambassador with Chrysalis, the organization helping women to get back on their feet, Shauntay helps them with interview and resume skills. "I firmly believe in teaching a man to fish rather than giving them the fish. The program appeals to me because we are teaching life skills and making the lives of these women better."
A spokesperson for Aura - a breast and ovarian cancer center, she focuses on encouraging women to get regular check ups.
Helping the homeless and encouraging those with mental illness, is another of her favorite causes and is close to her heart because her father, mentally ill and homeless, was never found.
Born in Starkville, Mississippi, the actress has appeared in numerous shows. Regularly appearing on Nickelodeon's iCarly, she finds herself identifying with the kids. She's also been a regular appearing with award winner Idris Elba (Milk & Honey) and performed various other gigs. Her favorite thing, however, is hosting.
Right now she has her own show on Channel 38, HZN - Headline News - a sister station of CNN. There she speaks on pageantry and entertainment. She also works with Wills TV where she co-hosts a spot on the latest in cars. This later show is presented by autotrader.com. On the Travel Network, she hosts a show called Fine Living. In this, she goes to all the big cities to explore off the beaten track adventures.
Her other goals include working on becoming a fitness expert. Eventually, she would like to own her own gym. "I think of all the hard work and training I had to put in while I was running for Miss USA. While it was stressful and interesting, my favorite part was the swim suit competition.
She never has yet been on Access Hollywood, but she certainly has done a lot of good with her short life.
