Much of Scottsdale’s old town center is populated by art galleries, with many of these featuring Western and/or Native American arts in this “most western of western” places, as one of Scottsdale’s taglines goes.

Every Thursday night between 7 – 9 PM you can join the buzz and follow the sidewalk guides to the many galleries participating in the week’s artwalk.

You’ll find wine and munchies within the galleries, musicians outside, and a feeling of festival.

You may be part of the art, as we were, when we went to a gallery where the Korean artist asked us to work on a piece that was about karma (“In Youn”), explaining that she found import and connection in our coming to see her work and wanted our brushstroke help to capture our life connection.

Besides the general artwalks, there are themed ones such as the upcoming Western Artwalk (February 6) and the Native Artwalk (February 27).

These are the themes that seem strongest overall in Scottsdale’s gallery scene.  If you’ve been to large art shows like Basel Miami or even the open gallery nights in Chicago’s River North area it is immediately apparent that Scottsdale’s art scene is contrasted by hewing to its Western locale.

Scottsdale is probably THE place to go to see a wide variety of Western and Native arts, if that is what you seek.

If you are a morning person you can have an entirely different and more private experience of the Scottsdale art scene.

Get up early on a Saturday or Sunday morning to admire Scottsdale’s ubiquitous public art and peak into gallery windows choosing any that you want to return to later when they are open.

Without the distractions of crowds and festivities, this was a very peaceful way to get the lay of the land and give the art works in the windows their due of long looks.
