"HWĪT" Features the Work of Renowned Artist J.J. L'Heureux at the Loft at LIz's!

On Friday, December 12th the work of renowned photographer & artist J.J. L’Heureux will be part of a group show at the Loft at Liz’s. Gallery owner, Liz Gordon and Randi Kreeft work closely together to create stirring exhibitions each month. Together, they have organized an eclectic group show, choosing several mediums all with the same them White.

The title, "HWĪT" was the brainchild of gallery director Randi Kreeft. “HWĪT or Huīt (from the old English or Germanic origin) which is translated as ‘WHITE’ is a return to basics – a chance to deconstruct and define the elemental or the new. From art to politics, spirituality and religion, white has found distinctive associations among the ranks of mankind since the very dawn of our existence. Throughout our history of art, it has served as a device for light, or as a symbolic or conceptual means of expressing rebirth. White has marked significant passages and defining moments throughout our human history.”

“Most shows at the gallery are curated thematically.  In this case it is the color White. Although none of the works relate to the holiday season, for the past 5 years I have chosen a color that relates to the season,” said Gordon. “That said we do have one exclusive photography show every April. The shows that are annual is one based on Nature in May and the summer show is the annual Diverted Destruction Show based on found object, assemblage with materials diverted from the trash.”

The art and photography of J.J. L’Heureux is a perfect addition to a winter exhibition. Gordon said she is looking forward to seeing L’Heureux’s work installed at the gallery. HWĪT will spotlight five of L’Heureux works…both paintings and photography. “She will have a fantastic photograph from one of her Antarctic expeditions as well as paintings,” said Gordon. “The experience to achieve the work is incredible.”

L’Heureux’s work is on view in museums and gallery shows all over the world. The artist explained that she is happy to have her friends from LA see the work at such a great venue as the Loft at Liz’s. L'Heureux also remarked at Gordon’s wonderful energy...as well as both her and Kreeft’s commitment to the art. L'Heureux added, “Randy often surprises me with his knowledge and information on different art subjects. An example is the exhibition title: HWĪT”

L’Heureux has been trekking to Antarctica since 2000 as a photographer. Her experiences had a huge impact on her. The beauty of the environment…the glaciers and wildlife all have inspired her to create incredible paintings. She calls them “Bergy Bits.” The Bergy Bit Series features abstract paintings with multi-dimensional layers.

“We are all familiar with the idea of glaciers, icebergs, snow fields, and hundred of other words descriptive of snow and ice.  I traveled to Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia moving from one glacier to the next where they spill out into the Beagle Channel to see the colors of ice.  Leaving these ice fields I knew this would become the focus of my next painting series. I continued to Antarctica where the ice came alive to me in ways that transcended its coldness and vastness.”  See L'Heureux's art website and her photography website.

Additional artists to be included in the group show are: Natalie Arnoldi, Carlos Grasso, Eric Johnson, Stuart Kusher, Elizabeth Orleans, Diane Silver, Zadik Zadikin as well as guest arts (from Gallery 1307): Marco Abbamondi, and Amedeo Sanzone. Performance artist Amy Kaps will perform at the reception.

The opening reception for “HWĪT" takes place Friday, December 12, 2014 from 7:00pm – 10:00pm. The Loft at Liz’s is located at 453 S. La Brea Avenue, located above Liz's Antique Hardware, Los Angeles, CA 90036;(323) 939-4403; See the Loft at LIz's website.
