An overcast sky and a prediction for imminent afternoon rain did nothing to deter the chic, stylish and style-hungry from attending the invite-only preview of BiKa Swimwear's Rajputani Spring/Summer 2012 Collection. The exclusive 16th-floor rooftop of TENTEN Wilshire was buzzing with those awaiting the most recent offerings from swimwear designer AmbiKa Sanjana. DJs Richie Rich and Jules P provided the beats at the 5-hour-long party presented by BLUFIZZ along with TENTEN Wilshire. The crowd was a mélange of fashionista, press, and party-goer, and all in attendance had a fabulous afternoon filled with cupcakes and cocktails (plus, the rain never did come down to spoil the show).
BiKa's Rajputani Spring/Summer 2012 Swimwear Collection is truly the best of both worlds: an impeccable balance of regality and functionality. Urban-inspired hoodies mingle with stunning hand-worked haute couture. Deep blues, oranges, fuchsias and limes are accented with intricate gold and multicolored sequin work at the necklines. Subtle tie-dye prints permeate the pieces softly, and do not ever overpower the clean lines of Sanjana's designs.
A daringly cut one-piece animal print, side-tie halter suit is balanced on the runway with a more modest deep orange bandeau top, which is paired with a matching mini sarong skirt. Several tunics and coverups could actually make a successful transition from beach to day wear: in particular the semi-sheer, long sleeve orange hooded tunic with ornate gold neckline detailing. A versatile blue halter maillot is presented with an oversize beach bag that coordinates with the trim of the suit. Particularly functional and flattering is the sheer red sarong-like side-tie pant, which glides effortlessly down the runway over a stunning one-piece with side cut-outs and circular, asymmetrical accents. A bright green peacock feather paisley print one-piece sports an eye-catching lime ruffled neckline. A sleek fuchsia two-piece flaunts an intricate indigo wave-like pattern along the bikini bottom hem line. Attention is both on adornment and fine detail.
Sanjana herself is elegant, confident and well-spoken, and takes a few moments to chat about her vision immediately following the runway presentation. She based the BiKa Rajputani Spring/Summer 2012 Collection on the royal ladies of Rajasthan, the northwestern region of India known as "The Land of Kings." Sanjana is herself of Rajasthani descent, and has also lived in Mumbai and Miami. She is deeply influenced by always living in such close proximity to large and powerful bodies of water. Sanjana made her fashion debut in 2009 with her B. Vika line, which was well received at LA Fashion Week and critically acclaimed at Project Ethos. She now heads BiKa Swimwear along with co-founder and director of operations, Ajani Patel.
AmbiKa Sanjana's swimwear vision set the runway ablaze at TENTEN Wilshire on March 31, 2012, leaving those in attendance of the Rajputani preview eagerly awaiting what lies ahead for the next collection. Fashion and function are both served by Sanjana's streamlined, royal and ravishing swimwear designs.
