Chic and traditional with a twist of futuristic, young Israeli-born designer
Yotam Solomon has a knack for creating very modern, sexy, feminine silhouettes. As part of
LA Fashion Week, Solomon’s
Spring/Summer 2009 collection was revealed at
Box Eight on Friday, October 17th.

Opening the show with a white fitted cocktail dress and geometric shape strapped sleeves, it was clear that the audience was in for a provocative, yet innovative fashion ride. The take on this new collection is fresh, dramatic, and racy as the hemlines are higher and the fabrics fit closer to the body.

What is so fun to watch was the designer’s diverse assortment of add-ons to his garments. For instance, the gray short sleeveless dress with front pockets, high-waisted shorts with front zippers, strapless cocktail dress filled with stone cut-outs, and mini dress with overlay panels.

Like some of his cocktail frocks, Solomon combined a modern, artistic edge to his architectural garments. The unique detailing of the geometric cut-outs was a key element in Solomon’s collection this season. We see it in his garments and we especially see it in his thigh-high gladiator-inspired heels.

Yotam Solomon is one of my favorites this season, although, there is one dire imprint to his line that had me shaking my head. Some of the very fitted, body-conscious cocktail dresses were a little unflattering on the catwalk. The models are gorgeous and the particular pieces are stunning, however, it was a little painful to watch when the models seemed uncomfortable in the structure of some of the dresses. If an article of clothing is accurately measured, it should fit well and flow seamlessly with the body, yet there were a couple pieces of Solomon’s clothes that appeared a lot more complicated than that.
One ensemble, in particular, just didn’t seem like it did a woman’s body justice. With the buttocks hanging out from the backside, the dress gave me the impression that it was way too tight. Instead of giving the woman a shape, it flattened her, and not in a good way.

Still, Solomon redeemed himself when he sent a floor-length, strapless, green layered gown that was both exquisitely pleasing to the eyes and on the model. His final few pieces were of a fitted cocktail dress with contrasting upper bodice and sleeves and a three tear shoulder contrast bridal gown with elongated front and back opening that substantiates Solomon’s brilliant talent and heart for fashion.

As a recent graduate of the
Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Solomon made his debut last year and received immediate attention. And despite my short criticism, I applaud
Yotam Solomon’s aesthetic and architectural approach to fashion. He is truly an artist and I am definitely looking forward to his future collections to come.
