(Los Angeles) October 21, 2005. A classy event took place on stage one at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles as models behind a curtain prepared to grace us with their presence. There was not any caviar served at this posh event I speak of, instead eyes feasted on the eloquent designs of Yael Aflalo, for the Ya-YA Spring 2006 Collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
YA-YA may be considered a young company, founded in 1999, but the elegance in design surely suggests otherwise. Launched in 2002 as a sportswear collection, it now features nothing anyone would want to sweat in. But don't presume their line offers eccentric yellow-feathered tutus that could only be brandished by the likes of Bjork. Instead, the spring collection offered aesthetically pleasing dresses and blouses that compliment the silhouette of a woman. The designer highly utilized chiffon for her refreshing designs and complimented them with beaded necklaces and leather bags. Safari jackets, linen pants, and crocheted ponchos made debuts among the silk dresses as Devon Aoki (Sin City) and Nia Long (Alfie), along with the rest of us, sat in utter-awe.

As the show came to a close I most certainly mistook the lovely Designer, Yael Aflalo, for one of the models. Born in Los Angeles in 1977, (sincere apologies-if most others were under the belief that you were still 25) Aflalo has already found immense success in her brand, based in the L.A. fashion district. Instead of mass producing t-shirts and opening up stores on every block next to Starbucks, Ya-Ya distributes a line that is artistically crafted and extensively detailed to select boutiques and department stores. I believe Yael Aflalo has truly captured a sense of class for the woman of today that do not live in a world with chariots, ballroom dances and arranged marriages.
