Sue Wong is the epitome of grace, elegance and grandeur. The invitation to join Sue Wong for high tea at
The Cedars, her sumptuous home, turned out to be entrance into divine enchantment. Everything Sue Wong does is extraordinary. This was the first event to kick off Fashion Week in Los Angeles, 2009. Beauty • Magic • Transformation, the theme of her Spring 2010 Collection “
Belle Époque,” defined the mood. “Belle Époque” which is French for the Beautiful Era, was a time during the seventies of the 19th century in Europe, marking a golden age in arts, science and culture which influenced impressionist artists (including
Van Gogh,
Monet,
Degas, etc.) with the Oriental mystique of Japonisme, the term used to describe the craze for Japanese culture and art. Ms. Wong went on to explain how the era gave rise to “the Haute Couture featured gowns rich in exotic feathers and furs.”

Guests were invited to roam through the magnificent rooms of The Cedars with breathtaking décor in incomparable Sue Wong style. Everywhere one looked was a feast for the eyes. Rooms were adorned in a magnificent array of gorgeous, rich fabrics obviously designed by Sue Wong, with elaborately carved and painted pillars, walls and ceilings worthy of the grand dame herself.

I’m sure Sue Wong must be an extremely complex person---how could she not be with all that talent? But as our host she is simply (if you can use the word simply in a sentence relating to Sue Wong) but nevertheless, she is simply the most elegant, warm and delightfully charming person you could meet. We were all mesmerized by the glamour she creates in the world she invited us to share with her, yet she immediately put everyone at ease and made each person feel welcomed to her home.

The Cedars has a colorful history of it’s own, having been owned by the head of
MGM Studios back in the day, which explains the presence of large, carved golden lions guarding each mantelpiece in every room. One guest told me that the bedroom with the alcove in it was once the lair of
Jimmy Hendrix, but other notables like
Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn and Howard Hughes were also guests at The Cedars. Lawrence Davis, the publisher of LA Splash Magazine said for many years before Sue Wong purchased The Cedars in 2004, he attended parties for various charities at the exotic home, located in Los Feliz. The estate was featured in featured in classics like
Sunset Boulevard in 1950 and
Easy Rider in 1969.

While guests strolled though the opulent rooms, graceful, sinewy models almost appeared to float around us, while some stepped onto pedestals set up in the living room. Harpist,
Jill Flomenhoff strummed lovely, delicate harp music, which wafted throughout the rooms.

The first models to enter wore soft colors and wispy ruffles, reminiscent of Degas’ ballerinas, then moving up the drama scale, they worked their way through the diverse themes with bright colors of lime green, peachy coral, bright blues, neon pinks, each one more dramatic than the last. They were absolutely stunning with beautiful, floral headdresses, magnificent jewelry, and accompanied by striking handbags. As they appeared, each creation drew gasps. Gowns were decorated with work done by the finest artisans, with hand-sewn embroidery, stunning beadwork, sexy feathers, elaborate ruffles, frills, satins and unrivaled flair. The crescendo was apparent with the appearance of the delicate, glamorous bridal gowns, each one romantic and exquisite. Any one of her bridal collection would be perfection for a Platinum Wedding!
