Fun, flirty and playful designs
Smashbox Studios: For Fall 2007, Designer Joy Han presented a playful, flirty line with a distinct pull from the Mod Era for her collection on Sunday, March 18 at Stage One during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, Los Angeles. www.mbfashionweek.com While viewing the collection, I was reminded of fashion icon, Twiggy during her heyday and the imaginary that made Twiggy a household name. Short blonde, bob-styled hairdos; baby doll dresses; large plaid prints and floral pinafores are all things that Han used in her collection reminiscent of the fashion icon. It was a case of the 1960's heyday with a play for the 2007 woman.

In this collection, Han showed us a number of baby doll dresses. The dresses were fun, flirty and playful. The fabric selection varied from silky charmeuse, cotton prints to blended fabrics. Another interesting aspect to the Voom Fall 2007 collection was the addition of the hobo handbag to her line. The hobo was done in color block, medium sized with a play on a burgundy color palette. Other handbags of choice in the collection were modern with elements of art deco on the details. I will not be too surprised if I see the Voom handbag in the editor's pick of Lucky magazine in one of their upcoming issues.

The collection color palette was in hues of red, purple, orange, ivory, black with an addition of white in small increments. The red was mostly used in the plaid and paisley print while the ivory was used in a metallic, easy flowing fabric. What comes to mind was the Victorian styled blouse and then we saw the same color hue in knee-length dresses. What will a collection be without the use of black in the line? Designer, Joy Han used black in solid pieces and then as a blend to the remaining colors.

Another interesting fact about this collection was the dominance of the baby doll in the line. Mostly when a collection is shown, the designer will have a fair amount in mixing of wardrobe separates, not so in the Voom Fall 2007 line. In my opinion it would seem that Han believes that as a woman we should embrace our girly and playful side by wearing a dress. For her dresses, Han added long, black tights for the most part. While with her other dresses, the bare leg was an option of choice.

As the pieces continued to unfold down the runway, I noticed that the cut of the pants was wide legged and high waisted. Another interesting addition to her line was the use of suspenders. These were either used in a jump-suit ensemble of the hot pants or as standard suspenders with the pants. While I was viewing the collection, it was great to hear the clapping appraisal from the audience.

Designer, Joy Han showed us a line that works for the girly, woman. The Fall 2007 collection was vibrant, sexy and modern all pull together. It was a pleasure viewing and critiquing her line. Since she used the Mod Era as an inspiration for this line, it will be interesting to see what her inspiration will be for her Spring/Summer 2007 line later this year. It's a Wrap.
