Rising luxury designer Thuy Diep is an outstanding local designer. Hailing from a family of tailors who ran a tailoring school and owner of a clothing shop in Vietnam, fashion was always near and dear to her. Thuy reminisces that as a young girl, she made princess gowns from her parents left over fabrics.

At the age of 6, Thuy migrated to the United States which added to her growing creativity of designing. As she became older her plans to design shifted to business. She attended Brown University and became a Technology Consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers.  Working as a consultant laid the blueprint for her as a business entrepreneur.  “I learned a lot about professionalism and business which are both skills that I think make a huge difference as I work on growing my own fashion label,” said Thuy.

  Thuy’s natural ability to craft and put together fashion apparel could not be denied. She eventually left business to attend the Parsons School of Design to pursue her given talent. 
Following graduation, she held jobs in the fashion industry that helped her evolve as a designer, including a position with a New York-based Parisian atelier providing draping and pattern-making services for high-end designers.  “My various fashion jobs brought real world application to what has always been viscerally inside of me,” said Thuy. “These jobs have luckily exposed me to all facets of the industry, including design, production and business. Especially valuable, was my work with draping and pattern making -”the unsung heroes of all designers! Being fortunate enough to work side-by-side with a great pattern maker has been invaluable to now working with our pattern makers to translate my own designs into beautiful garments.”

The classic palettes are inspired by the colors of the sea that convey energy and the casual colors are black and gunmetal with bright washes of color. All of these fundamental tones are found in Thuy’s spring/summer collection to brighten up any fashionista’s closet.  “For this collection I wanted to focus on color as much as design,” said Thuy when discussing her inspiration. “Color is exciting and hopeful.”
 
When shopping for your summer wardrobe, look for styles that fit your body type. Thuy suggested to become aware of fabrics, shapes, textures, and cuts when purchasing skirts.  Thuy has showcased three main styles the slouchy skirt, peplum skirt, and the pencil skirt.

“The slouchy and pencil skirts are great for daytime and office wear while the peplum is a more playful statement piece and can be dressed up with a sexy pair of heels and  jewelry,” said Thuy.  The slouchy skirt is usually paired with an understated top to let the skirt be the focal point. “A faux seam opening at center front and contrasting waist panel is what makes this skirt unique,” said Thuy. The Bernetta is a textured Silk Organza from France that throws the light giving it a special sheen.” The slightly slouchy ensemble can still create a silhouette that is as sophisticated as the pencil skirt.

The peplum skirt has popped up in various points in history, mostly during the 40s. Thuy found a way to make it her own with impeccable attention to detail. The pencil skirt is a universally flattering and hugs the curves of a woman’s body. Another one of the hottest trends for spring 2009 are trench coats. The trench has been around for quite some time now, and is considered to be a traditional piece, a staple of every wardrobe. Thuy revamped the classic trench to keep up with some signature looks and colors that graced the runways. “Color is becoming quite important to me. There's a sense of optimism for me. If you trace the colors [throughout my collections], you can actually map where I am emotional,” said Thuy. Thuy offered two great everyday trench coats in neutral tones such as sand and brazil nut. Shades of beige and flesh-toned nudes are the must haves for the season.
