Smashbox Studios: On Thursday, October 18 at The Lightbox,
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios, Designer,
Kristopher Enuke, Oligo Tissew showed us a collection that was tranquil, melodies and soothing on the eye. The opening section displayed an array of whites. Enuke used the whites in his signature jeans; as a color staple with his knits; the off-the-shoulder tops; his classic jackets and for the wide brimmed hats. The use of white then made way for bright yellow, mustard, turquoise, teal and lavender as his collection continued to unfold.

In true
Oligo Tissew fashion, graphics were used on tank tops; dresses; long t-shirts and on the back of slip dresses. The graphics were abstract in nature, though some of them clearly displayed a sunny theme of delicious treats. I remember the one graphic that reminded me of an ice cream sundae given the colorful colors in the graphic. Other graphics were similar to peaceful afternoons or a walk in the park. It seems as though Enuke does not move too far from Mother Nature when designing his line.
From nature to city sleeks, the collection then moved to the bold, vivid colors of the city girl. Lavender solids; lilac tones and charcoal grays were used to interpret the modern woman’s wardrobe. The jackets were form fitting; the sleeves were bell shaped in part while the skinny pants were cut close to the bone. These designs were fit for the city sleek woman, jet setting around the globe.

European elegance

The mood of the show then transported us to France as we listened to the allure of the French song which played on sophistication and elegance as the knits continued to unfold down the runway. The knits were shown in short, bold color dresses; with belts around the waist and accompanying long knit scarves on some of the pieces. Enuke has established himself as one of the world’s most talented designers thru his creative play with wool.
Fashion Week coverage is synonymous with photographers in the press pit. The photographers that covered the Oligo Tissew Spring 2008 Collection made known their admiration in beauty as the gorgeous models made their way down the runway. Other than just clicking away at their cameras, we listened to the photographer’s moans and whistles as the models displayed sensuality and sex appeal in the designs. Listening to the photographers, made me smile although I felt that in part they were out of line, but on the other hand, this was also live entertainment.

Towards the end of the collection, floor length dresses were shown. The dresses were mainly scooped neck, puff sleeves, column style with text printed on the front and some places on the back of the dress. The dress also had an interesting design line towards the tail end of the dress. In the final analysis, the collection continued to be a pleasure on the eye with fabric selection, a true highlight. It’s a wrap. Veronica Viljoen.
