Octopi Clothing Comes to Chicago

Looking at HABIT

For Chicagoans seeking clothing that is unique, Octopi could become a habit. Octopi is an inventive line of clothing that began in 2003 when Sarah Welsh and Madeline Davy, Rhode Island School of Design graduates, began creating one-of-a-kind pieces in Brooklyn. Octopi takes its name from the animal that has been their inspiration in its ability to transform its color, texture and shape to suit diverse environments, Octopi's tentacles began spreading from New York to LA (reported in LASPLASH, August 2004), and now to Chicago's very own Wicker Park boutique, HABIT.

Designer Lindsey Boland, opened HABIT in August, 2005. It is dedicated to promoting independent designers, including Lindsey Boland's own label, Superficial, Inc. Over half of the designers showing at HABIT are local (including Madeline Davy who grew up in Chicago). Boland feels, 'There is so much creative talent in Chicago', that, 'I want HABIT to provide an environment where local designers can not only sell their work but create a community.' In this effort, HABIT hosts sample sales, trunk shows and bi-annual fashion shows, in addition to mixers for designers and industry professionals to network and 'share war stories'. HABIT was named 'Best New Store' by the Chicago Tribune, and 'Best Boutique' by Chicago Magazine.
