Indian designer Naeem Khan chose to showcase his Fall 2006 collection at the Atelier at Bryant Park. Although the Atelier has a maximum capacity of 450, Naeem could have filled the venue twice over if the crowd gathered outside was anything to go by. The up and coming designer has indeed acquired a growing fanbase but the over enthusiastic crowd that included more than it's fair share of 'under twelves' could have been more to do with the rumour that Beyonce Knowles was due to make an appearance. Naeem met Beyonce while designing the costumes for her new movie 'Dreamgirls'. It just goes to show which age group clearly has its finger on the pulse in the city of New York.
If Beyonce had attended, she would have been more than happy with a collection that included a colour palette of rich browns, pale pinks and golds; perfect tones to compliment skin of all colours. His floor-length gowns in velvet and silk gave a feeling of warmth with a hint of 'royal flavour'.
The figure-hugging dresses and Bridget Bardot hairstyles created a definite feeling of oldschool Hollywood 'Oscar' glamour. Speaking of which, actress Patricia Clarkson who co-stars in the Oscar-nominated 'Good Night and Good Luck' did attend the show. She has already worn Naeem Khan gowns to two recent award shows and may have been window-shopping for a dress to wear to the Oscars.
Naeem accredited the inspiration for his Fall 2006 collection to the opulence of 18th century France but with interwoven golden and silver threads giving an elaborate and sparkling effect, the collection had more than a hint of his native India.
A favourite from the collection included a 'pirate style' velvet jacket with platinum woven metallic piping.
There is no doubt that Naeem Khan possesses an ability to design a dress for every occasion and his figure hugging cocktail dresses and flattering gowns are set to shine at a party near you.
