Lulu Frost Jewelry Makes West Coast Debut

For one young east-coast designer, everything old is new again' literally.  Since founding her company, Lulu Frost, in 2004, Lauren Saltzer has made a name for herself by specializing in funky, fashionable jewelry for both men and women, made from antiques, including room numbers from the recently-renovated Plaza Hotel in New York, cut steel belt buckles from the 1860's, keys of all shapes and sizes, charms, and other vintage items.  Saltzer augments the items with gold and precious stones, turning each into a one of a kind piece.  The result:  jewerly with a sweet, nostalgic feel that somehow transcends flea market chic.



Lulu Frost is named in part for Salzter's grandmother, Elizabeth Rock Frost, who worked in the estate and antique jewelry business for over thirty years, and still works with the company today on acquisitions.  Saltzer credits her family with giving her the eye for quality antiques, which as anyone who's been to the Sunset-Melrose flea market knows, is not as easy as it might seem.  Vintage numbers and letters from the Plaza Hotel are an especially good find-- where else can you get a cool necklace, conversation starter, AND a piece of history, all at once?  We were sold on this from the very beginning.



Lulu Frost jewelry has been popular on the east coast for some time' you can currently find it at high-end stores like Saks and Barneys, or at their studio on the Lower East Side in New York.   The modern-antique pieces have also been featured in a number of magazines like Vogue.  Last month, Saltzer brought the Lulu Frost collection to Los Angeles for a special preview, as she is expanding nationally.  We have to admit, we were impressed by the funky pieces, and immediately wanted to add them to our ever-expanding accessories collection, especially the Plaza Hotel numbers and the pocket-knife necklace (though you'll probably need to pack it in your checked luggage when travelling, because the days of wearing even an antique knife around your neck on a plane are, sadly, over). 



Lulu Frost designs can also be seen on many celebrities, including Ashley Judd, Cate Blanchett, and Kate Hudson.   And in case you're wondering, Salzter and crew don't just stop at original designs made from antiques' yes, they CAN take your grandfather's old watch fob and turn it into a beautiful piece that you'll want to wear out on the town, or to the office.
