Jenny Han showcased her
Belle Du Jour Spring ’08 line at Smashbox Studios during LA’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. During Fashion Week, the visual sense takes precedence, not only for the designers, but also as attendees – celebrities, buyers, and press – make their own attempts at fashion flair. With the excitement of organized chaos, the shows are a place to see and be seen among the fashion community, where LA’s most exciting and newsworthy designers reveal their latest attempts to dazzle.

Young designer,
Jenny Han, joined forces with apparel and fashion entrepreneur
J. Andrew Coy, and started her namesake line in the fall of 2004. “My goal was to bring back legendary diva looks and translate that into versatile styles while maintaining a distinctly original, soft and feminine feel.” Says
Han.
Han’s Spring ’08 collection debuted on the runway with fabric of the thinnest silk and simplicity of design. As the garments were revealed, a feeling of walks along the Adriatic or an island resort came to mind. With the exception of the bold, almost too-heavy makeup on the models, the feeling was airy and light. A color palette of greens, browns, muted purple, blue and yellow opened the show. Earthy, yet dynamic. The pieces were a mix of multiple fabrics, prints and solids, in certain cases creating a multi-dimensional patchwork effect. Most of the pieces were the simplest of cuts with elements such as a ruffled hem or sleeve cuffs, an adorned neckline or back detailing. This detailing adds a sexy, feminine quality to the line. With the exception of a couple of long gowns, the dresses were all extreme mini.

The line was accessorized with long silk scarves tied around the head or neck and draping down the back in a flow of ribbon adding femininity and whimsy to the look. The backs of many of the styles are low cut and/or elegantly and uniquely detailed to add interest to the simple lines. Various dress designs were presented in solids with interesting facets around the neckline and hem. For example,
Han’s version of the little back dress is a straight-waisted mini with a scoop neck and back with fabric flower detail around the entire neckline.

With the progression of the designs, it becomes clear that
Han is vintage inspired. The straight waistline, multiple ruffled short dresses are reminiscent of the 20’s flapper look. The simplicity of certain cuts also evokes an
Audrey Hepburn feel. While some tops and dresses are distinctly a baby-doll style. The waistline is not emphasized in any of the items, however some conform to
Han’s own version of an empire waist.
The tops were paired with severely small silk shorts; however as individual elements of a wardrobe, the tops can be paired with any number of other already existing separates in your closet in a variety of fabrics and versions of shorts, pants or skirts.
Han featured several items in light cotton and knit as well.
Adding to the feel of resort wear, the designer included a bathing suit design in both silver and gold with a short slinky cover-up. Sparkle also subtly adorned a couple of the dresses suited for a summer night out.
