LASplash.com: Style and Fashion Hillary Flowers 2007 East Hamptons Fashion Show By Luis Antonio (writing/photography)
On Memorial Day weekend I jumped on the LIRR to cover a fashion show given by my friend Hillary Flowers, which was going to take place in the East Hamptons of Long Island. I live on Manhattan Island; however, Long Island is another famous Island which is part of New York's geography. Not only is this island bigger then Manhattan, it too is filled with a wonderful cultural history, attractions, and events you wouldn't want to miss on a visit to New York. It is in the summer, though, when this island is at its most popular and a playground for the rich and famous. So off I went (it's about a two hour ride on the train) to mingle with the residents and visitors of the Hamptons. I wanted to enjoy again why the Hamptons are such a popular summer destination.
Hillary's show wasn't until later in the evening so the first thing I did was to find a place to eat! What does one eat in the Hamptons? Seafood! Long Island has some of the best seafood in the world, so I had to have some. In a place I found called Nichol's on Montauk Highway I ordered a seafood platter fit for the king of the sea, and it was delicious. I could barely finish my plate. Once I was able to lift myself away from my table, my next destination was the Main Beach in East Hamptons. It was a beautiful sunny day, so I was really looking forward to the sand and surf the Hamptons have to offer.
What a beautiful beach the Main Beach in East Hamptons is. White sand and lovely blue Atlantic water make this one of the most beautiful destinations on the east coast. The water is still quite cold now, but I'm sure by the 4th of July it will be just right. However, there were still some people in the water swimming, surfing and having a good time. I took of my shoes and walked on the warm sand and enjoyed the lovely surroundings, the sunlight, and the sounds of a really peaceful, rather quiet, beach. I can see why this part of Long Island is the prime real estate prized by the well-to-do! So, after my rejuvenating day at the beach, I was now ready for the Hamptons nightlife and Hillary Flowers' fashion show!
Hillary's show was held at Prime 103 on the Montauk Highway in East Hamptons. Prime 103 is the newest addition to Ed "Jean Luc" Kleefield's East End restaurant showcase. He also owns (or has a stake) in Madame Tong's in Southampton, and JLX Bistro and the re-conceptualized Mumbo Gumbo (slated to open "soon") in Sag Harbor. This new restaurant, about half steakhouse, quarter sushi bar, and quarter bottle-service club, is the result of an off-season makeover of his first Hamptons restaurant.
The restaurant got much crowed as time got closer to Hillary's event. Outside, the cars, being valet parked, were mostly of European design with names like Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. The event was another promotion of Cass Almendral of CassWorld! Cass is a very popular promoter of events in the Hamptons area and has his finger on the pulse of Hampton life in New York. Hillary's show started about 11:00pm, and once again she didn't disappoint. Where does this lady come up with all the ideas for her fashion line? Hillary was also featured in a photo shoot for Hamptons Daze Magazine with some very lovely photos taken of her by the beach. It was only fitting that one of the songs the models strutted to was the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money"! It may seem just a little materialistic, but come-on guys' it is the Hamptons!
One of the highlights of the event was a performance by Middle Eastern Dance Artist Jaklina who treated us to a sexy and sensual belly dance routine that left the crowd wanting more. This 6'2' Eastern European beauty is a living work of art and her movements are pure poetry. Part of her act included the balancing of lighted candles on her head and other parts of her body. This woman is a goddess of fire!
Well, Hillary and her entourage did it again and it was another fashion show I was very happy, so were the patrons of Prime 103, to attend. I know Hillary will have many more shows in the Hamptons where the rich and famous will have a chance to see and purchase the creations of one of the most interesting designers to come around in some time. Thanks again Hillary for your hospitality. Your tops in my book!
