(L)Celebrity, Jenna Jameson, in Heatherette Spring 2008 (R)The pedestrian cross-walk with car tire accents

Smashbox Studios: Design duo,
Traver Rains and
Richie Rich, delivered a collection that was fun, mystical and theatrical in design showmanship during their
Spring 2008 Collection, Monday, October 15 at The Main Tent,
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios for the scheduled 8:00pm show. Prior to the start of the runway show, the energy in The Tent was one of disco vibrancy; tapping to the beat of the music; flashes going off as we got caught up in the electrifying music that filled the space. The visuals to the collection were “pedestrian stripped cross-walk” over the runway surface with hot pink and black car tires placed evenly along the runway. The backdrop to the runway had the design duo’s name,
Heatherette, encrusted in sparkles with their signature hot pink color spotlights, reminiscent to that of New York designer,
Betsey Johnson.

Americana in concept
|
As the collecton, "
Route 66: California or Bust” unfolded on the runway, it became evident that the Heatherette Spring 2008 line was paying homage to Americana lifestyle due to the abundant use of the stars and stripes in their designs. The male models strutted their designs in “oil-based bodies”, sexy, firm torsos and black grim on parts of their bodies to illustrate an urban look to the collection. While viewing the show, I paid more attention to the male models and as an add-on; I noticed the pattern selection and fabric choice of their trunks. The swimwear trunks were colorful, basic styles with added shine to some of the designs.
Costume-like garments sashayed down the runway. Bustier tops; skirts with layered petticoats; baby dolls dresses and tight pants with platform shoes all gave the illustration of designs fitting for a themed party or a masquerade ball. As these designs continued to flow down the runway, I thought of ways that I could style them for a fashion editorial page or which Los Angeles venue the “Heatherette blue ribbon baby doll dress” could work for as a Red Carpet arrival piece for an A-List Celebrity such as
Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan or
Ashlee Simpson.

In my opinion, the accessories to the Heatherette Spring 2008 Collection were true fashion highlights. Platform shoes, oversized bags, playful rings and razor straight bangs pulled the Americana theme together. One model wore a yellow, printed travel bag; another wore an army inspired backpack while another wore a lady-like cherry night bag. The platform shoes were shown in white, red and stripes with some of them in lace-up ankle straps. Another key accessory was the use of the playful, large rings that I spotted on some of the models down the runway which made all the pieces of the collection work.
For the dresses, the designers went for the colorful print in fabric. The dresses were either short-short or floor length. V-neck; A-symmetrical; round or strapless were the neckline choices in their dresses. For the finale, Hollywood Celebrities,
Jenna Jameson and
Lydia Hearst wore show-stopping pieces to close the show. Short on their heels, designers
Richie Rich and
Traver Rains joined them for the curtain call. The runway show was a blast right to the final piece as the whimsical theme continued. It’s a wrap. Veronica Viljoen.
