Tony Micelotta, Head Barman for the last four years at Dukes Hotel on St. James's Place in London, is an award-winning martini maker.
His legendary martini won the World Martini Championship Paissa in 1981, a competition held in Italy. He received a 'best martini in London' accolade from the London Times in 1999.
Tony is a native of Bologna. Prior to coming to Dukes he worked at the Grand Hotel Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda in Italy.
Legend has it that the Martini at Dukes Bar inspired Ian Fleming to come up with the quintessential James Bond line: 'shaken, not stirred.' Since the first Bond film, all of the 007s have frequented the Dukes Bar. Other celebrities who have had the pleasure of his martini are Hugh Grant, Nikki Haslam and Donald Sutherland.
Here are Tony's preparation methods and special tips:
Place two drops of extra dry Vermouth in a frozen cocktail glass and pour approximately 3 jiggers of frozen gin or vodka over the Vermouth. Take a long slice of fresh lemon peel, pinch to release lemon oil on to the surface of the cocktail, then rub the lemon peel around the rim of the cocktail glass and drop gently into the drink.
Gin and Vodka must be frozen for 24 hours before use
Cocktail Glass should be frozen for a few hours prior to use
Recommended Gins: Gordon's Tanqueray, Bombay Sapphire or Plymouth Gin
Recommended Vodkas: Belvedere, Cristall or Grey Goose.
