"The definition of
burlesque is imitation of style, and it started in the 1860s... when it began they were imitating those Victorian women that wore corsets and hats and gloves and were wealthy and rich...The burlesque part was imitating that and adding the comedy of taking things off so, 'oh yeah, she's fabulous and she walks around with her corset and this and that, I'm going to take it off.'"

Burlesque dancer
Dakota Ferreiro of
Forty Deuce grew up in the Bronx, the daughter of a policewoman for the NYPD and a maintenance worker father who supported her love of dance and performance from an early age. Dakota's lifelong dedication to dance has made her very intellectually aware, not only about the cultural context of
burlesque, but also about the artistic experience of performing it: "One reason why I like doing burlesque to perform is just because you are on stage by yourself as a dancer. You do your own character, your own performance...It's like, you know, a rock star having their moment."
Dakota explains that every night as a
burlesque dancer is unique. The costume, the 3-piece band music, and the aim to tease might be the same, but there is no set choreography and the performance is shaped by the crowd, her mood, and the vibe of the moment.

Dakota defines her style as, "the unexpected high octane sexuality where you almost don't know, sometimes I don't know what I'm going to give, so you just don't know what your going to get with me...I'm just like give, give, give! Sexy strong, sexy strong fast energy! I almost feel that as soon as I start that even when I stop I'm still going. It's a continuous energy"
She further explains that performing is, "like a Jekyll and Hyde thing where you almost feel like you've taken on something else, you enter like another realm. It's almost like being out of body."
Dakota dreams to broaden the cultural impact of
burlesque and bring its sexual intelligence to the pop and urban market. She believes that
burlesque's comically smart and diverse explorations of what's hot and what's sexy opens both male and female minds to a deeper discovery of their sexual taste. She thinks the titillating contemplation that
burlesque brings about creates an awareness that sexy is not limited to, "a video vixen that's on the screen taking their clothes off and shakin' their booty." That can be sexy, but so can other things and
burlesque explores and expresses the reality that, "everybody has their own style of flavor."
