Smartwater- Hollywood trend or the real deal?
With my smartwater bottle in one hand and the handle of my treadmill in the other, I set out on a quest to discover who was all the smarter as result of this water. Would it be me for getting detoxified and supremely hydrated? Or would it be the fine people at Glaceau for having just pocketed $1.99 for something that comes free from the sink?

lets see if it is as high tech as it looks

Glaceau, the makers of smartwater boast a variety of reasons why this particular version of the old favorite stands out from the rest of the bottled water clan. The self proclaimed 'purest form of water you can drink' title doesn't appear to come easily. It is developed through a stimulation of the hydrologic cycle- the process by which all fresh water in nature is developed. It is evaporated, molecularly separated and then condensed through vapor distillation, which removes what you don't want- dissolved solids, heavy inorganic materials and other elements typically found in spring water. Because it is so pure, the water molecules have the ability to absorb toxins throughout the body increasing the body's ability to detoxify. Next, the addition of electrolytes adds what you do want- minerals including calcium, magnesium and potassium to promote rapid hydration. Add Denzel Washington and Kate Hudson toting the water in People Magazine and you have the recipe for a best seller. Take that Evian!
I knew I had to try this out for myself. Biology lesson aside, what really counts for me when it comes to water is how much it quenches your thirst and how long it can help your body hold up during exercise. I decided that the best way to test this product would be by taking it on a test run- literally. If I could run for longer while drinking this water than I could while drinking a different kind of water then it would pass my test.

the proof is on the bottle
|
I equipped myself with my ipod and a bottle of Aquafina and started running. After 52 minutes on the treadmill my sides were cramping, (a sign of dehydration!) my vision was blurring and my water was empty. I called it a day. The next morning I faced the treadmill again, this time with the smartwater. I kept my eye on the timer and after 52 minutes I checked my vital signs and decided that I could probably go for longer. I kept running and when I decided I had finally had enough, I was shocked to see that I had been running for an hour and 20 minutes!
A variety of elements could have attributed to my longer run. It could have been the temperature, my mood, it could have been anything. However, no matter what, the numbers don't lie. I ran for 52 minutes on the Aquafina and for 80 minutes while on the smartwater. It was enough to pass my test. The next time I go running, I will have a bottle of smartwater handy.
