This winter has proven to be cold. We’re talking feel it in your bone marrow freezing cold. Arctic blasts have driven the temperatures down to single digits and even below 0 in some parts of the country. We have things to do and freezing when we go outside isn’t one of them. In a search to find an alternative to freezing, I found Nau (prounounced “now”).
Nau is a clothing company based in Portland, Oregon. They design, make and sell sustainable urban and outdoor apparel. Nau saw the outdoor apparel markets typically lacked style. An excellent example is the huge puffer jackets which keep you warm while looking like the Michelin man or his wife. Nau set about designing and engineering items which combined the core functionality of technical apparel with a sleek, refined urban aesthetic. Their collection draws on inspiration from classic silhouettes such as the Trench Coat and the Peacoat and then updated those designs with sustainable, performance fabrications, functional details, and modern, minimalistic styling.

Nau’s goal is to use design to redefine business so it can be a force for change. They do this by making sustainability and philanthropy inherent in everything they do. They blend tailored and technical to craft urban and outdoor apparel. They are pioneering premium, eco-friendly fabrics by using sustainable fabrics such as recycled polyester and organic cotton, while avoiding the use of nylon whenever possible. They donate a percentage of their sales to charity. If that wasn’t enough, just wait there’s more: they have the Nau and Forever Guarantee - “We stand behind (and in) everything we make. If one of our products fails to satisfy you at the time you receive it, or does not perform to expectations during its long lifetime, simply return it to us. We'll replace it, repair it, issue a credit or extend a refund.”
In my quest for winter warmth I selected the Nau Outré down trench, the Nau down scarf, and the Nau down loopner scarf.
The Nau Outré down trench:
A water resistant insulated trench in a slim, urban cut - made of recycled polyester ripstop and 800-fill down for maximum warmth. The diamond quilting and offset zip make a subtle draping with a clean finish, while a high collar and dolman sleeves create a distinct silhouette.
The Nau down scarf:
Offering the warmth of down in a compressible, low-profile design. Long enough to tie in your favorite style, it conceals a hidden pocket at each end to double as hand warmers. Super compressible, the scarf packs into one of two zip-closure stash pockets that double as hand warmers. When packed, this pocket serves as a great padded stash for goggles, glasses, etc.
And the Nau down loopner scarf:
Wear it up or wear it down, this incredibly lightweight, insulated scarf is a soft-as-satin accessory to your winter wardrobe.
I am looking forward to staying toasty warm while looking sleek and refined in my Nau apparel. Bring it on winter but please be gentle with us all.
