MIA x Versace - Everything You Hoped It Would Be (and More)

Rapper and style maven M.I.A has teamed up with Versace to produce a capsule collection that is bold, exciting, and eccentric. Known for her bold visuals and unique style that takes inspiration from 90s hip hop and dancehall, the art school alum, ups the ante with classic Versace style. M.I.A hails from Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design (alma mater of designer Alexander McQueen), utilizes her knowledge of design aesthetic and applies it to clothing that breathe new life into the line. The end results are designs that juxtapose high-end fashion with street-style savvy.

The Versus Versace line has long been the energetic and vibrant branch of the Versace house, embodying a fresh and sporty take on high-end design.  The line, formerly under designer Christopher Kane until 2012, will now feature a revolving door of top designers and fashions icons at the helm. This new collection with M.I.A  features an eclectic mix of men’s and women’s styles ranging from T-Shirts and dresses, to printed pants and outwear.  The prints combine classic Versace motifs of bold gold Versace logo with Sanskrit and lotus flowers.

The collaboration seems to reflect the ongoing trend of trickle-up fashion where top designers are influenced by the consumer, rather than the other way around. Taking its inspiration from the knock-off culture of the streets, the capsule collection uses prints found on knock-off Versace merchandise, reversing the cycle of bootlegging. Stealing prints and imagery from high-end has long been a trend in on streets in New York Seventh Street and Downtown LA, where fashion fans could obtain the symbol without breaking the bank. The status and affluence of Haute Couture is turned on its head with this collaboration. When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle. Versace's designs have always been copied, now it's Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue”, M.I.A tells WWD.

The collection will be available online and in select stores on October 16th.
