Marina Toybina, the Emmy Award-winning costume designer for Fox’s hit series, The X-Factor, created the exciting circus and sideshow-inspired costumes for Taylor Swift’s opening performance for the 2013 Grammy Awards. Working all in white, Toybina designs transformed Swift into a modern take on the traditional ring-leader with a tall, caged top hat with crystal accents, an asymmetrical front closure tail coat with crystal-accented cuffs and a Victorian jabot, and a flowing skirt that was dramatically tossed aside to reveal a pair of high-waisted tuxedo shorts. Toybina also created the striking costumes for Swift’s cast of 14 dancers, 7 specialty circus acts, the background singers and band. The main stage performers wore white costumes with bold red accents, while the background singers and band wore costumes with black accents.
The Award-winning Costume Designer for Fox’s The X-Factor dressed the Pop Star and her cast in costumes evocative of vintage Big Top Performers.
“Taylor wanted something visually stunning and innovative for her opening performance, something that the audience hadn’t seen before,” says Toybina. “I proposed the all-white-themed Big Top spectacle. I was inspired by costume construction and detailing from the 1930’s and 40’s, but I wanted to give the silhouettes and characters a modern spin. I wanted to give her and the audience a circus performance unlike any they’d ever seen.”
In addition to her work on The X-Factor, Toybina is also known for the costumes she's designed for the tours of Juliette Lewis, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Carrie Underwood.
