"It's about colors. It's about volume. It's about tradition. It's about heritage. It's about technique. Each one of the pieces is a traditional one but all are re-visited and done with all new techniques, all new shapes we are experimenting with. Quite experimental, but in a very traditional way." Alber Elbaz is speaking of the Lanvin Fall/Winter 2012-2013 Prêt-à-Porter Women's Collection, the collection that also marks his tenth year as Creative Director of the Paris fashion house.
The Lanvin Fall/Winter 2012-2013 Prêt-à-Porter Women's Collection is luxe, luscious, and lively. The real stand out of the entire collection is Look #7: a stunning red-orange sculptural rubber dress with an exquisitely high neckline, worn with a small clutch made of white varnished wood and a shiny black pump. Another eye-catcher is the knee-length flowing black cocktail dress of washed black grosgrain ribbons, worn with a rubber and lace necklace, wide matte black belt with tiger's head buckle, and the ever-present shiny black pump - very Black Swan revisited. A regal gold plasticized lamé flower brocade coat tops a grey stretch brocade mesh skirt, and is worn with a black flower jacquard bag, black ebony and olive wood necklace, rubber necklace and rhinestone necklace, and a shiny black ankle boot.
Biker-Chic is revisited with a sleek charcoal grey bonded over-knit skirt and jacket suit set. Shocking magenta washed matt organza skirt and top brocaded separates masquerade as a sleek one-piece sheath tunic. They are worn with a black satin and embroidery flap bag, green rhinestone earrings and belt, an oversized red resin necklace, and a merlot platform sandal. The finale of the collection is the sophisticated ivory "Techno Taffeta" dress with supple and intricate detailing throughout the entire garment. It is worn with a mustard satin and embroidery flap bag, blue satin earrings, a red satin necklace, black resin brooch, two blue resin brooches, and a velvet wine platform pump. The runway presentation was capped off by Elbaz himself taking the stage and serenading the audience with his own personal rendition of "Que Sera, Sera" backed by a full orchestra, before inviting everyone in attendance to come backstage for champagne.
Virginia Smith (Fashion Market Director at American VOGUE), commented on what made Elbaz's 10th Anniversary show at Lanvin so special: "Alber did an amazing show…everyone is truly happy for what he has done at Lanvin, and what he will do in the future." She adds that all of the Lanvin Fall/Winter 2012-2013 Prêt-à-Porter Women's Collection looks are "Iconic, but they were done with sort of a new twist. I don't know how many looks there were in the show - I think I lost count at 50...the pure quantity of what was out there! Yet every look was very special." So, did Smith check out Jessica Alba, Dita Von Teese, Tilda Swinton, Anna Wintour, or Thailand's Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana in the crowd? "No, I was too busy checking out Pharrell (Williams) - he was (seated) in front of me."
