Rankmark 2010 Golf Irons Test

Rankmark Seal of Approval

Irons Test Results March 2010

When selcting irons, the two main considerations that come into play are: A) How do they look or feel and B) How close can I hit them to the target? Over sixty total sets of clubs were submitted if you take into account that each manufacturer was asked to provide three different shafts (stiff, regular, & senior). A few manufacturers wanted to send six clubs, two different sets with three shaft configurations for each.

We then divided the testers into 2 groups, those with 15 or higher handicaps (average players) and those with 14 or less (better players).

One interesting note, we had a set of clubs from a small manufacturer that we had a large number of golfers try. Most were very surprised, the clubs performed much better than they had expected but invariably they did not place them near the top. The clubs did not look like the top clubs and were a little rough which we feel influenced the golfers. So looks and the lack of advertising really hurt these clubs.

Remember, Rankmark tests are designed to simply give golfers a starting point when they are trying their very best to make an "educated selection". If you wish to read our testing philosophy, click here.

Cleveland HB3 Irons

Cleveland HB3

ADVANCED INTERNAL WEIGHTING Weight removal on crown & sole recesses allow for internal discretionary weight placement and a 12% deeper face to CG depth than HiBORE XLi irons. ADVANCED SOLE DESIGN The new sole design provides recessed sections to reduce drag and improve turf interaction while maintaining wide sole characteristics for increased control and forgiveness. SEAMLESS TRANSITION The new HB3 takes hybrid irons to the next level in distance, forgiveness and overall performance. Their seamless transition and full hollow construction throughout the set provides golfers with irons easy to hit.

Ping g15 Irons

Ping g15

The technology of the G15 iron provides the high-launching, maximum-forgiveness attributes that bring consistency to your iron play. The stainless-steel iron's cavity design features a new Custom Tuning Port (CTP) that expands the perimeter weighting and increases the moment of inertia. Weight savings from a thinner face are re-positioned to the toe for added forgiveness on mis-hits, and its wider sole produces a higher launch angle. Stronger lofts combine with a center of gravity located low and farther from the face to produce longer shots without sacrificing the higher trajectory required in a maximum-forgiveness iron.

Yonex Nanospeed 3i Irons

Yonex Nanospeed 3i

NEW for 2010, the Nanospeed 3i irons feature three different head designs to create one ultimate iron set. The hybrid design long irons (#3-#5) feature an innovative wide cavity and long sole that push the CG lower and deeper within the clubhead for higher launch and increased forgiveness. The pocket cavity conventional irons (#4-9,PW) in the Nanospeed 3i iron set feature a graphite cavity back design for improved feel and better control. The carbon graphite cavity insert ensures that the high repulsion face delivers maximum distance and forgiveness while providing a softer feel. The CG is progressively shifted closer to the club face across the pocket cavity long, mid and short irons (#4-#9, PW) for improved distance control and trajectory. The 3D Power Weight system at the heel & toe provides a higher MOI for enhanced control and a more stable swing.

Taylormade Burner Irons

Taylormade Burner

Improved SuperFast Technology incorporates progressive COR, MOI and shaft length, plus ultra-light shafts and grips reduce overall club weight and increase speed, to generate meaningful distance. A Multi-Functional Sole with beveled edges reduces turf resistance to deliver maximum force to the ball at impact. Inverted Cone Technology expands the area on the clubface that delivers higher ball speed, resulting in more consistent distance from shot to shot. Progressive face thickness and head shape and size make every Burner® iron uniquely powerful. COR and MOI have been optimized in every iron

Titleist AP1 Irons

Titleist AP1

Building upon the high technology design and resounding success of the original AP irons, Titleist introduces the new high performance AP1 irons for avid golfers. The Titleist AP1 are multi-material, dual cavity irons that take the design mission of "Advanced Performance You Can Feel" to new heights. The concept for the original Advanced Performance irons arose as a result of research that indicated serious golfers want performance with great feel, not performance at the expense of feel. The Titleist R&D team's advanced research group has been conducting extensive sound and vibration analysis aimed at reducing the harsh lower frequency vibration that causes poor feel in irons. This research led to combining several technologies and materials in the back cavity of the new AP irons resulting in a new Tuned Feel System to take feel to a new level. The new Tuned Feel System is a co-molded medallion of soft elastomer and aluminum plate. This insert has been specifically designed to improve the sound and feel of each new iron. For the thinner face, larger cavity AP1 a hotter, more lively feel has been enhanced.

Ping i15 Irons

Ping i15

In the design of the i15 iron, PING engineers focused on the better player who prefers an iron set that offers the control to play a variety of shots. Created as a progressive set, the longer irons are larger for more forgiveness. The mid- and short-irons are smaller to ensure workability and control on approach shots. The stainless-steel iron features a tungsten toe insert to add forgiveness to the mid-size design. A stabilizing bar and a new Custom Tuning Port (CTP) provide the feel and sound attributes preferred by better players.

Mizuno MX1000 Irons

Mizuno MX1000

Incorporating Mizuno's HOT METAL concept into iron design, the MX-1000 is for golfers looking for an extreme combination of distance and forgiveness. Astonishing distances that push the boundaries of the R&A and USGA's performance limitations are achieved by plasma welding a thin, hot, ES230 maraging steel face to a 431 stainless steel body - a technique perfected in Mizuno's MP Fli-Hi utility iron. The HOT METAL face is teamed with a hollow construction and internal weighting -encouraging strikes from a wide area of the face to hold their line with minimal distance loss. The hollow construction also allows weight to be engineered deep within the head for a naturally high trajectory - enabling the use of stronger lofts for even greater distance.
