Drivers Test Results January 2010

For this test, we have gathered golfers at every conceivable skill level, had them hit and compare the newest long distance blasters to their own well-worn drivers. After all, the manufacturers imply or claim that their newest ($299, $399, $499) driver will hit the ball higher, straighter, or further. Over 100 golfers tried these clubs and voted for their favorites. The clubs are ranked in order and in a statistically accurate manner and these are the companies who have been awarded

Titleist 909 D3 driver

Titleist 909 D3

With a classic pear profile, deep face, and 440cc titanium construction, the Titleist 909D3 is a high performance driver delivering MID LAUNCH WITH LOW SPIN. The 909D3 features a tour proven, modern profile that creates a low and deep CG for reduced spin, higher MOI, and longer, straighter drives. The classic pear shape with a smaller, deeper face enhances workability for shot and trajectory control. The tuned sole of the 909D3 includes optimized pockets and an internal rib for reduced vibration, providing solid feel and better sound. An integrated titanium blind bore hosel design saves weight, provides solid feel, and allows for more shaft options. The factory installed SureFit Swingweight Screw helps to position the CG deep while also providing a precise head to shaft match.

Ping i15 driver

Ping i15

The versatile design of the i15 driver meets the needs of golfers who place a high priority on working their tee shots. The traditional pear-shaped 460cc titanium head is engineered with a bulge crown design and deeper face to optimize energy transfer for greater ball speed and the solid feel preferred by better golfers. Internal weighting reduces spin and the hosel is positioned slightly back from the face to help promote tour-preferred trajectories and control. Its titanium carbon finish provides a sleek and optically pleasing appearance.

Cleveland Launcher DST driver

Cleveland Launcher DST

MaxCOR Face Technology Variable face thickness allows for a higher COR on off center impacts. Mishits benefit from a higher trampoline effect for more distance. 9 grams have been removed from the face and repositioned deep in the head to create a deeper center of gravity for higher MOI and straighter drives.

Srixon zTX driver

Srixon zTX

The high performance driver was designed to provide longer distance with increased accuracy for competitive golfers worldwide. The Z-TX driver features Starburst variable face design, which enlarges the driver's C.O.R. by 5%, providing added distance, consistency and forgiveness. The Z-TX driver is made with a new low-density, highly-elastic, rolled titanium face-material called Super Ti-X51. This latest light-gravity material, when combined with the driver's Starburst variable face design, gives the Z-TX driver the largest and most responsive sweetspot that Srixon has ever brought to market. The Z-TX driver's clubhead body is also made with a proprietary low density titanium, which, when combined with its TWIN CAM sole design, allows for the redistribution of 11 grams of clubhead weight out to the extreme perimeter of the clubhead for increased M.O.I. The 6 part bulge and roll, located on the driver's clubface, helps increase the launch angle and reduce the side spin leading to better results on mis-hits. The Z-TX driver's 460cc shape was inspired by Srixon's professional tour staff, while the straight top-line allows for better alignment consistency on every shot.

Callaway Diablo driver

Callaway Diablo

The new Diablo Edge Tour Drivers are designed to give golfers a distance advantage every time they tee it up. They offer superior face technology, a higher MOI, a deeper CG, better aerodynamics - and it all adds up to the longest, most accurate all-titanium drivers Callaway Golf has ever made.

Nicklaus Dual Point ML3

Expanded Sweet Spot due to Multilayer Face Construction Enhanced Speed Benefits and Ball Velocity due to Aerodynamic Sole Feature and lighter swing weight Maximum Clubhead Release Through Impact due to Traditional, Pear Shape Design Enhanced stability through impact zone

Callaway FT Tour driver

Callaway FT Tour

In designing the FT Tour, Callaway engineers incorporated our best technologies into a conventionally shaped, high performance driver. When we introduced this clubhead to Tour Pros around the world in 2009, they immediately fell in love with the increased ball speed and drastic distance gains they saw. Here's your chance to play what pros like Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els tee up on Tour.

TaylorMade R9 driver

TaylorMade R9

The R9 460 Driver features TaylorMade's Flight Control Technology (FCT), which lets you change the face angle, loft and lie. This means total adjustability to promote up to 40 yards of side-to-side trajectory change. In addition, this classically shaped 460cc driver also features Inverted Cone Technology for maximum forgiveness on off-center hits, a deeper back CG (center of gravity) for an easy-launching position and a super high MOI.

Extended Crown Profile from shallow face promotes low and deep CG for high launch and low spin for longer carry and maximum distance 6-4 titanium construction with thin crown wall section allows discretionary weight to be moved to the perimeter for added foregiveness Enhanced Face Thickness design for additional forgiveness on mishits Fujikura® Motore F1 65 shaft: R/S/X Flexes

Adams Speedline driver

Adams Speedline

Company research reveals that, on average, players swing geometric drivers (large footprint, sloping crown, long from face to rear) 3-percent slower than standard 460cc heads. This slowdown is caused by too much head drag during the swing. (The crown, in particular, creates lots of drag.) It's a big deal because a slower swing typically translates to less ball speed and shorter shots. (A 1-mph decrease in ball speed, at 100 mph swing speed, equals 2.1 yards shorter carry.) Speedline bucks this trend, and improves air flow, with a reshaped crown (peak height is much higher than topline) and reduced frontal cross-sectional area (heel and toe cutouts). The Speedline is offered in both Neutral or Draw heads.

Nike SQ driver

Nike SQ

The SasQuatch (SQ) 460 Driver. The SQ 460 features a distinctive yellow sole design and club head design with what company officials call the "ideal ratio" between the width of the club face and the depth of the club head.

Mizuno MP 630 driver

Mizuno MP 630

The ultimate "Tour Ready" driver, the MP-630 possesses a player preferred pear shaped head, and a low, shallow COG for medium-low spin and a penetrating yet workable ball flight. The Hot Metal face of MP-630 is sheet forged 6-4 Titanium with CORTECH design which provides explosive distance and maximum control off the tee. The MP-630 is frequency tuned by Mizuno engineers to provide unmatched solid feel and sound at impact. Key Features Hot Metal Face - 6-4 Titanium face with CORTECH design for explosive distance and maximum control. "Tour Ready" Head Shape - Player preferred, pear shaped head with a slightly open face. Neutral, low COG - produces a penetrating and workable ball flight. Tuned Sound and Feel - Frequency tuned through modal analysis and impact sound analysis to ensure a powerful and solid sound.

Ping g15 driver

Ping g15

The G15 is engineered for golfers of all abilities seeking an extremely forgiving driver that delivers distance and accuracy. Its 460cc titanium head is longer front to back and features PING's patented ultra-thin crown technology. Weight savings from the thin crown are positioned as an external sole weight to optimize the center of gravity for higher trajectories and reduced spin. A larger face is designed to increase ball speed and provide consistency across the entire hitting surface. The new PING-designed TFC 149D high-balance-point shaft allows for a five-gram increase in head mass (without increasing swingweight or overall weight), which results in higher ball speeds and an increased moment of inertia.
