The Golden Gate Kennel Club holds its all breed dog show and competition this weekend at the Cow Palace in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fittingly, this Sunday is the Chinese New Year and, you guessed it, the year of the 'dog.'
The Golden Gate Kennel Club event is definitely worth the trip! This Show is one of the most prestigious in the nation and ranks right up there with New York's Westminster. Over 2,000 dogs representing more than 350 breeds will be on hand. Yes, you can look at these fantastic four-legged beauties up close (and, in some cases, even pet them), and breeders will be standing by to discuss anything to do with dogs.
This year's Show is very special since the amazingly adorable Glen of Imaal Terrior will be shown for the first time.
Events take place on Saturday, January 24th and Sunday, January 25th beginning at 8:30 a.m. and include finals judging for Best-In-Show dog. Top-notch agility team demonstrations will be given both days at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The Cow Palace venue has an interesting history. In 1915, the San Francisco Marina District was the site of the Pan Pacific Exposition. This Exposition featured livestock and, when the events were over and the temporary buildings were set to be razed, a place was needed to house the animals.
It took ten years to finance the building project, and legislative delays and the onset of the Great Depression pushed the completion date out further.
The building did not open until 1941. By that time, the general public had lost its enthusiasm for caring for 'farm animals.' In fact, one story has it that the current name 'Cow Palace' came about because of a newspaper editor who wondered aloud, 'Why, when people are starving, should money be spent on a "palace for cows?"
The Cow Palace is also the home of the annual Grand National Rodeo and is officially the 1-A District Agricultural Association, a State agency of the California Department of Food and Agriculture's Division of Fairs and Expositions.
The Cow Palace is located at 2600 Geneva Avenue, San Francisco, CA, 94134. Admission to the Golden Gate Kennel Club event is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children. There is a family ticket package (2 adults and 2 children) for $25.
