The Los Angeles Master Chorale Celebrates 50 Years - Golden Season

Good as gold; few words can describe the astounding success and excellence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale as well. After a half decade of music-making, the Los Angeles Master Chorale is still going strong.  The chorale’s 2013-2014 season celebrates fifty years of stunning sound and innovative programming with special events and concerts.  Here’s to fifty more melodious years!

The LAMC is a staple of L.A’s music and cultural scene, ensconced in Walt Disney Concert Hall yet accessible to all, the LAMC deserves a golden birthday bash.  The chorale has been consistently commended for its complex sound and unforgettable concerts.  Under the direction of Grant Gershon for the past twelve seasons, the chorale has excelled.  In addition to its impressive repertoire, the LAMC’s golden season features special events throughout the year.

The LAMC starts off its season in style on Sunday, September 22, 2013 with a multimedia presentation of the chorale’s rich history. Visitors will have the chance to learn about the chorale’s rich history through a multimedia gallery style exhibition in the Walt Disney Concert Hall.  The evening’s program is arranged chronologically by director and consists of works that have shaped the chorale.  In addition to paying homage to LAMC’s past, this concert also features surprise guests and a LAMC reunion for the program finale.  The night ends with a complimentary champagne toast with the 115 member chorale.  

LAMC presents its signature Messiah Sing Along on Wednesday, December 11th.  This concert invites audience members to interact with the music and temporarily become part of Grant Gershon’s renowned chorale.  The LAMC follows up with its performances of Handel’s Messiah, sans-audience participation, on Sunday December 15th and Sunday December 22nd.

As part of its 50th season celebration, the Los Angeles Master Chorale pays tribute to their former composer in residence (1995-2001), Morten Lauridsen.  During the six years of his residency, the chorale won great acclaim, including several premieres and a Grammy® Award-nominated CD: Lux Aeterna. On March 14th, there will be an exclusive showing of Shining Night: A Portrait of the Composer Morten Lauridsen at the Alex Theatre in Glendale.  This film leads up LAMC and Lauridsen’s reunion concert on March 16th, which features some of the composer’s most iconic works.

The chorale and the Los Angeles Philharmonic come together again with the second Minimalist Jukebox Festival on April 6th.  The program includes David Lang’s the little match girl passion and a reprisal Steve Reich’s You Are (Variations)The LAMC premiered and recorded Reich’s You Are (Variations) for Nonesuch in 2004 and is bringing back this tremendous work for their golden anniversary. Lang’s the little match girl passion draws from a Hans Christian Anderson story and stunned audiences in 2011. 

In addition to these exciting engagements, the LAMC will host the 25th Annual High School Choir Festival on May 2nd and perform in seven programs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall

The LAMC wraps up its 50th season with “Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond” on June 8th.  This stunning program draws on emerging talent from all over the globe and features four world premier pieces by David Lang, Francisco Núñez, Shawn Kirchner, and Esa-Pekka Salonen respectively. Each commission honors of the chorale’s 50th season. As a testament to the chorale’s special rapport with Salonen, the singers themselves underwrote his piece. The choir will also perform a reprise of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Los Cantores de las Montañas with a Latin American guest choir, Huayucaltia.

Even after fifty years of music, the LAMC is finding ways to keep their program fresh and innovative.  Music is intangible but the Los Angeles Master Chorale is surely worth its weight in gold. Happy 50th!
