Sinead O'Connor at City Winery Review - American Kindness Tour

Many will remember Sinead O’Connor for her 1990 blockbuster hit “Nothing Compares 2 U” off the album “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” and perhaps her famous appearance on SNL where she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul ll in protest of the Catholic Church child abuse scandal.

After that, she slowly crept out of my consciousness and I really had no idea of her continued music career.  So when the opportunity  came up to see her perform at City Winery, I jumped at the chance out of curiosity mainly.

The multi-Grammy award winning artist is kicking off her American Kindness Tour at City Winery with a three-night stand after triumphant sold-out performances at New York City’s esteemed Lincoln Center Festival this past summer.

Since releasing her latest LP in February 2012, “How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?”, O’Connor has received some of the most resounding praise to date in her 25-year celebrated career.  Since the release of the album, she has been playing various festivals and venues around the world.

City Winery is a fully functioning Winery by day and one of the most unique event spaces by night.  Seating capacity is 175 and the chance to see Sinead O’Connor this up close and personal is not one to be missed.  It felt very intimate and I was completely  and utterly blown away.  Sinead sang the bejesus out of her songs and she had the crowd completely engrossed in her every word.  Claiming shyness, she wore sunglasses for most of the performance, but did take them off a few times and it felt like she was baring her sole.  Her outfit of choice was a long sleeve, floor length Victorian-style dress- perhaps in protest of the skimpy outfits worn by some of today’s younger performers of which will remain nameless.

Her constant tweaking of her microphone volumes and subtle directions to her fellow band members proved she’s a true perfectionist and cares as much about the technical side of things as well as the message that comes across from her songs.  The bulk of the performance came from songs off of the new album, but we were also treated to a few of her earlier hits including “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

Angry and ferocious one moment, tender and thankful the next, O’Connor’s voice was quick-cutting from roar to hush and was absolutely mesmerizing.  Don’t miss the chance to see her while you can.
