Invigorating, intoxicating, and uplifting soulful music is how I describe what I experienced last weekend. The harmonious sounds filled the air throughout Griffith Park as it set the tone for a music celebration.

R& B and Contemporary Artist Soul Artist took the stage, it's truly the best of the best that came out to share their music talents. Grammy Award Winners and Nominees where among the lineup such as Rahsaan Patterson, Loose Ends, Joe, Lalah Hathaway, Conya Doss, Marsha Ambrosius, Eric Benet, Avery Sunshine, Lyfe Jennings, Angie Stone, Joe, Eric Roberson, Goapele, Melanie Fiona, Vivian Green and Jazmine Sullivan

Friday night's lineup at the LA Soul Music Festival started off with a bang! Rahsaan Patterson was the first to take the stage. Rahsaan Patterson is an R&B singer who's singing style resembles Stevie Wonder, Prince and other great male tenors in the R&B music world.  Rahsaan is also an accomplished songwriter, writing chart topping hits for singers Brandy and Tevin Campbell. Rahsaan Patterson wore a casual but classic look that evening. Rahsaan kept cool with a fedora hat, white button up shirt and red pants which added a pop of color Rahsaan's vocals has a way with soothing the listener. His stylistic phrases and ad libbing or scatting sounds that make the voice sound like musical instrument. The crowd went wild on his most popular hits that topped the R&B charts in the late 90's such as "Where You Are" and "Stop By". Rahsaan Patterson has a loyal following that have been with him since the beginning of his career and he exudes confidence and strength as he connects with them. Overall Rahsaan's performance was no less than perfect. His voice is a well trained instrument that makes twist and turns very few singers can maneuver. It was a joy hearing him perform a Prince cover as a tribute to the late great uniquely artist like himself. This time next year I hope he's on the lineup to give us more of his heart and soul!

As the temperature rose in Griffith Park to the mid 90 's, the performers continued to take the stage one by one. Eric Roberson had the crowd on their feet as he performed his hits including "A Tale of Two" and Melanie Fiona who just had a baby, performed with such an effervescent style. Melanie Fiona is truly one of the most talented young soul artist of our time. The headliners that day were Lalah Hathaway and Eric Benet. Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Lalah Hathaway was spectacular during her performance that evening. She wore sophisticated white linen pants and linen shirt accompanied with her long signature locks which were shades of purple. As Lalah took the stage she sang her first hit from the mid- 90's " Heaven Knows". Lalah's musical talents are second to none. Her smooth sounds can be described as silky, buttery and simply gifted. Lalah Hatahaway's tone is deep yet unique and melodically unchallengeable. Lalah Hathaway's ability to skillfully glide from a low resonance to a rich full and robust high range and volume, makes the crowd go crazy and leaves others somewhat mesmerized Lalah also graced us with a couple of cover tunes including Earth, Wind & Fire's "Love's Holiday" as well as Anita Baker's first topping single  "Angel".  If you want more from this soulful songstress, she is present on social media, follow her and send her your love.  Lalah Hathaway performs often so you might be able to catch her live here in Los Angeles, CA.

As the sun went down the night cooled off just in enough time for Friday night's headliner to take the stage. Eric Benet is an Award Winning singer/songwriter who burst on the scene in 1996 with his debut album " True To Myself". Eric Benet has released several album and over the years Eric Benet continues to share his sultry voice to millions of fans. That evening the ladies who couldn't get enough of his good looks and charm which some would say is almost parallel to his singingThe crowd waited patiently for Eric Benet to take the stage, and when he did it was explosive. Eric Benet caressed the microphone with is rhythmic sound.  His sexy voice is strong and commanding leaving you wanting more and more. Eric Benet performed for at least an hour where he sang all of his chart topping hits including " True To Myself" "Sometimes I Cry" and his famous duet with soul singer Tamia the song  "Spend My Life With You" which he recreated with his solo background singer Jessica Jolis, who brought down the house with her gospel rifts and melodic tones. The most touching thing that evening was when Eric Benet introduced his beautiful daughter India Benet to his fans, then invited her to sing India joined the background singer on Eric's last songs and her voice was amazing! She is destined to follow in her father's footsteps in hopes to continue the family's musical artistry.

That was the end of Day 1 of the LA Soul Music Festival, shortly after, many more would step on that stage into the spotlight!
