Ring in the New Year with Style: 5 Easy Fashion Upgrades that are Making an Impact

Okay, I’ll be honest, the uncharacteristically overcast skies and scattered rain hitting Orange County has me in a magazine reading mood. As someone that considers himself trendy and fashionable, without being metro, I took my blues and refocused my mind on the styles I’ll be wearing in the new year.

My friends and family know me well. The Christmas gift cards to Kohl’s and American Eagle are burning a hole in my pocket. So, here’s how I’ll be spending my Christmas cash and probably a little more to get my closet ready for 2017.

1. Track Pants, Again?

No, this isn’t the turn of the century, and we aren’t watching The Sopranos. Track pants and windbreakers are making a comeback. I noticed this trend while sipping coffee with some friends at The Library in Long Beach. At first I thought there were just a lot of people out exercising, but they weren’t breaking a sweat!

So, a few Google searches later and according to Vogue, this is definitely a thing. Don’t look at me, I didn’t do it! But it’s happening.

2. Bad Boys Wear Bandanas

Remember those cuts of fabric that hid the bank robber’s face on your favorite country western? Turns out, they’re not just for cowboys and cowgirls anymore. The bandanas have left Coachella and they’re back in the wild.

I love this because it’s just one more way a dude can express himself through fashion, while looking like a total badass. Will you go with a solid color, or are you the fancy type that likes a multi-toned print?

Just make sure you aren’t wearing the wrong colors in Compton…

3. Big Beards are Making a Statement

Beards have been cool for a while, but 2017 is introducing some new beard styles for guys to try on for size. A word to the wise, if you’re a natural red head, please don’t go with the Chin Curtain. I’m already worried about enough people trying to get their hands on me lucky charms.

But, in all seriousness, there are some cool styles jumping off the silver screen and into the concrete jungle. If you’re ready to make a statement, start with the place people look the most: your face.

4. Tote-ally Cool

The murse has been upgraded in 2017 with a fresh lineup of fashionable totes. I guess just hanging onto your iPad isn’t as cool as taking your entire mobile command post with you. And, for what it’s worth, my girlfriend would love for me to be able to carry some of her stuff while we’re away from the house.

The tote could be your secret weapon for matching form and function in 2017.

5. That 70’s Footwear?

It turns out that track suits aren’t the only blast from the past coming back to favor in 2017. Converses, shoe straps and buckles are making their way onto a pair of feet near you. I have yet to see any men’s high-heel platform shoes, but I wouldn’t be surprised at this stage of the game.

I mean, what goes better with those skinny jeans than a pair of beat up converses? It will be fascinating to see how track suits, 70’s shoes, expressive beards and totes play together in the coming year. Did I miss a fashion trend you’ve spotted while out on the town?
