Even though it’s the middle of summer, I’ve started checking out fall trends, thinking about layering and thicker, heavier fabrics. Don’t get me wrong – summer is great; but there’s only so much you can do with thin fabrics and swimsuits. Fall is more creative, it allows you to use your imagination and combine clothes in interesting ways. Plus, the colors are most often great: earth tones, dark, masculine hues and, once in a while, the obligatory bright color. Like every season, designers are doing their best to come up with something fresh, even if it’s just a reinterpretation of something from another age. Here are some of the trends I’ve spotted which can easily be taken off the runway and worn in real life.
It never gets old, it’s just freshened up to match today’s standards. Inspired by classic menswear, but with the obligatory modern twist, designers like Prada, Burberry or Yves Saint Laurent bring about tones of gray, ties and bowties, tailored pants and jackets, crisp buttoned-up shirts. The tweed coat, the frock coat –they’re both dapper outerwear that makes you feel like a million bucks.
A classic fall-winter materialalong with fur, leather can be edgy and sexy or cozy and warm. Yves Saint Laurent goes overboard with an all-leather look, while Tommy Hilfiger keeps it super classy with leather sleeves on a burgundy coat. And then there’s everything in between, like the bomber jacket or the biker jacket.
3. Retro prints
Taking inspiration from the past, and especially the 70s, many designers picked prints in their collections. Some are more subtle, like the red Prada coat for example, while others are opulent and bright, like Versace’s three piece suit that’s just tamed by a gray blazer. From sporty to elegant, there are prints to suit every style and need.
Most sunglasses of the season are inspired by aviators, more or less obviously. The Giorgio Armani sunglasses are round and medium sized, combining metallic and plastic elements. The Versace sunglasses for next season feature rectangular lenses and large metal details on the temples. We also find oversized Gucci sunglasses, with teardrop shaped lenses, and retro/steampunk Prada sunglasses that are round shaped.
For a casual and relaxed look, sporty style couldn’t be missing from any season’s trends. Various winter coats that hit mid-calf are worn with loose pants - the perfect uniform for the cold season. Wear with a sweater underneath for more warmth. Dolce&Gabbana suggest a very simple jeans and graphic tee combo, very wearable and ageless.
