The Massage Therapy Center - a great place to relax

Tucked away in the middle of West Los Angeles' little Japan is an oasis of relaxation.  I stumbled onto the Massage Therapy Center while trying to pick up a couple of hard to find sushi items at little authentic Japanese market.  I was struggling to get my heavy bag of groceries adjusted correctly when out the blue, I spotted the Massage Therapy sign on the second floor of the industrial style mini mall.

Although it didn't look like much from outside, something was telling me to go in.  I think it was the throbbing pain in my shoulders.

I walked up the stairs and into the bright clean waiting area.  I was greeted warmly by a perky receptionist who told me that she could squeeze me in.  She gave me a free sample of an interesting elixir that was supposed to make me relax and tasted something like watered down cranberry juice.

Soon my masseuse, Ashton, led me back to the pretty women's locker room.  The room had all the wonderful spa amenities including a steam room, showers, slippers, mouth wash and the most comfortable fluffy robe I have ever worn.

I slipped off my clothes and went into my assigned massage room.  Moments later Ashton appeared again, new-age-ish music played and the massage began.

I always feel a little silly at the beginning of a massage but this time it only took me seconds to feel at ease.  The Massage Therapy Center says that their massage therapists posses a rare ability to listen to your body and respond to it needs during the session.  And I have to say, my body definitely responded.  I could literally feel the tension floating out of my body as Ashton expertly kneaded, pulled and squeezed the pain from my muscles.  This was art!

The massage hurt - but in the way a really great massages feels.  All too often these days it seems spas like to charge extra money for deep tissue.  The philosophy at the Massage Therapy Center on the other hand is that it's not "right to limit the therapists during the session based on the price of individual techniques".

By the end of the completely full-hour customized massage I was relaxed, at ease and only a little upset that my massage was over.  I even got a lesson on how to breathe correctly to avoid future stress. The Center allows you to hang out in the locker room until you are entirely refreshed and ready for the world.

I have to say this was the best massage I've ever had and just when I thought it couldn't get better, two days later I opened up my mailbox and found a discount card to the Center.

All I can say is start making your reservations now.
