The Pilates Method is used for strength training, rehabilitation from injury, and improving posture and reducing back pain as it is a very effective method for strengthening your core.  SYNER-G offers a Pilates Mat Class—beginner to advance Pilates techniques, Bounce Back—strengthening the back, Springboard Class—controlled use of the springs, and Slow Motion—controlled movements and breathing, and Reformer Class—appropriate use of the reformer apparatus.

Since I had previous Pilates experience, I decided to give the group reformer class a whirl. (Beginners must take at least 5 private or semi-private sessions before being admitted to a group class to fully understand the basic technique and get the most out of a group class.)  Once you have the technique down, the Reformer Class proves to take those moves into a more cardiovascular routine.

With the small class size, I didn’t feel overwhelmed in a sea of bodies.  Erin made sure that each client was working out with the equipment at their individual level for a personally effective workout.  Each move can be taken from a novice level to an expert level, depending on your level of training.  With Pilates, all of the movements are coordinated with methodic breathing and use of the core stomach muscles.  As the class ended, I felt as though I strategically worked every muscle in my body.

Also offered at SYNER-G Studio for Pilates and Wellness is the Sassy Dance Workout.  Alma Moya, Founder and Instructor, created the unique dance workout for the body, mind, and spirit to revitalize your sensuality through confidence in your curves in hip, belly, and chest movements.  With a background in Cultural Anthropology and a certification in Pilates, Alma has infused culture into her love for performance and dance.

I liken the class to a fusion of belly dancing with a cool-down of Pilates.  Although, the dork in me couldn’t help but feel like I was on one of those hidden camera shows and someone was going to capture me waddling around like a wounded baby duck (the movements take some getting used to, but finding confidence in the movements is after all the point of the class).  In the end, it was quite an exciting and successful workout!  The class combined individual moves and group choreography.  The hour of class zoomed by, and in a workout, it is so important to keep me from staring at the clock to see if my torture session is done.

You may check out the class calendar as well as register and pay online at www.sassydance.com/registration.htm, or you may pay as you go.

I wrapped up my experience at the SYNER-G Studio for Pilates and Wellness with an amazing massage by Brooke’s Hands Therapeutic Massage, which couldn’t be a better name.  Brooke Wescott is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Physical Therapy Aide as well as an active member of the Association Massage Bodyworkers Professionals, and has studied multiple disciplines of continuing massage education techniques.  She applies and adjusts just the right pressure based on her client’s desires, which are expressed during a brief consultation prior to the massage and feedback during the massage.  Walking into her room, I was instantly at peace with her beautiful choice of green color, décor, aromatherapy, and sound (being a massage junkie, I can appreciate the importance of a relaxing atmosphere).  Adding her own twists to the traditional Swedish massage, Brooke’s Hands melted all my stresses of the week away.
