When searching for a high quality yet reasonably priced hair salon in the Los Angeles area, it is very difficult to find the right stylist for the right price without driving a good hour or more into the sunrise. Behold, the diamond in the rough of Beverly Hills, tucked discreetly into an unmarked office building on North Doheny Drive, Toshi’s Hair Studio.
This unassuming little space is beautifully lit with overhead skylights and elegant simplicity that is both cozy and artful. Toshi Aoki has been doing hair for more than twenty years and his salon is a private, one-man-show, that is catered and customized to fit his every customer’s needs. His availability is flexible, his prices are very reasonable, and Toshi’s eye for each individual’s perfect style and color is flawless.
My experience with Toshi began as a referral from a good friend of mine who sang his praises and put me in contact with him directly. He invited me in for a consultation for the following day at an hour convenient for me. When I arrived at the studio- which was very easy to find, despite the unmarked building- Toshi and I talked about the long term goals for my style, as well as the path that had brought me to his salon. I had gone from black hair, complete with extensions and Brazilian straightening treatment, to a bleach blonde bob in a matter of six months. I’m naturally a dark blonde with lots of stubborn body. Needless to say, my coif had suffered some major trauma and was in no condition for more processing.
To set me back on the path to hair recovery, Toshi agreed to weave in some lowlights to blend my natural color back into my super blonde bob, which would reduce the need for constant root touch-ups. He also used a deep conditioning treatment to help restore the hair shaft and then cleaned up my layers to give shape and new life to my style, which I’d refused to let anyone near for the previous six months. We came up with a ten month recovery plan that he and I would implement to help me reach my ideal goal for my crowning glory. Needless to say, it does not include any more peroxide or formaldehyde-based straightening processes. Additionally, Toshi only uses organic hair color, so it’s safe for you, him, and your hair.
Unfortunately, I’ve a ways to go with my hair rehab but I’m finally on the right track and I’ve not been wearing nearly as many hats of late per my usual. Toshi also gave me some great styling tips that have helped me fix my hair more easily on my own and use less of my favorite heat-based tools.
Overall, I had a wonderful experience sitting in his studio and listening to his Hollywood hair stories as I sipped on great coffee and relaxed while the man went to work at his craft.
