When was the last time you had a real slice of pie in Los Angeles? Unfortunately for most, that time only revolves around the holidays in which that store-bought-pie is thrown into the oven. But No, I’m talking about a slice of heaven being freshly delivered to you directly from paradise, ready to be devoured. Most likely never! However extraordinary Los Angeles is within the gastronomic world, truth be told LA has lacked a good pie place for a very long time.
Luckily for those of you who reside within walking distance of the Downtown Arts District you can get your daily dose of pie whenever your foodie heart desires at no other place than The Pie Hole. As for the rest of us, well, there’s always the drive, the metro, the bus or a good o’l bike ride for those who are more eco-friendly.
Located at 714 Traction Ave. in the 54 block neighborhood, right by Little Tokyo nestled snuggly in the same building that once housed one of LA’s most notorious bars, Al’s Bar, is The Pie Hole the best or only place in the West Coast to get your pie fix.
Having a variety of options from their Chicken and Cornbread Pot Pie that’ll have you asking for secondsto their savory Earl Grey Tea Pie or something smaller like the Mini Lemon Meringue, there’s no doubt about it that The Pie Hole has it all, and not to mention their delicious cup of Caffé con Panna which has homemade whipped cream leaving a simple yet elegant trace of a leaf in your espresso, who wouldn’t mind seeing that for breakfast– or lunch as I did. With a best seller like the Maple Custard (which happens to be the owner’s personal favorite) has the perfect combination of sweetness and tenderness and others like the Mexican Chocolate that is a bit more sweetened but still very much enjoyable are the reasons why The Pie Hole is the place to go for a mouth-watering slice of pie.
What I liked the most about The Pie Hole, aside from the welcoming atmosphere and the incredible aroma floating through the air, is the pricing. The pies are very reasonably priced for the amount of food you’re getting. Although The Pie Hole sells by the slice (orders for whole pies must be placed with a 24 hr. anticipation) it’s more than enough to fulfill the craving, although the urge to buy additional slices will remain. Having tasted and deeply enjoyed each and every pie and cup of coffee, I must admit that no matter how full I was after the tasting I wouldn’t have minded taking another slice for the ride home!
The good news is that The Pie Hole is now serving breakfast! Yeah, you heard right opening at 7 am on weekdays and 8am on weekends until 11 am you can now stop by and get a slice of heaven in the mornings. Keep in mind you are in LA and perfect parking is only but a miracle graced upon a lucky handful, so with that said get your wallets ready for this is a place where you won’t regret becoming a regular. Menu changes seasonally. Open form Tuesday to Thursday from 7 am -10 pm, Friday 7 am -11pm, Saturday 8 am -11 pm, and Sunday 8 am -10 pm or until pies are sold out each day.
