Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill Jazz Restaurant Review - A Delightful Night Out

Herb Alpert's Vibrato Grill, Jazz, etc. is a delightful restaurant nestled in Bel Air, one of the most prestigious areas in Los Angeles. Slightly off the beaten path but worth the drive for its distinguished dining experience that has been proven by its 10 years of existence flourishing among hundreds of amazing restaurants in LA.  It's more than just 'fine dining' with its various world-class music performances every night.

From the outside it looks like any other place, just another restaurant in the city, but when you step in, it’s like you've stepped outside of L.A. Decorated with eclectic yet elegant style, Vibrato has two floors of dining areas, with the main stage and bar area on the first floor, with a number of dining tables. The second floor is a private dining area with several of the tables at the balcony for a perfect view of the main stage. The warm yellow lights and soft jazz music gives you a relaxed feeling as you walk in and throughout the course of your meal.

Warm Raisin Bread and White Bread with butter

As a courtesy of Eden Alpert, we had a memorable dining experience at Vibrato's. We arrived for an early dinner, so the restaurant was nearly empty, just a few visitors at the bar.  The friendly host greeted us and sat us at a very good spot by the fireplace.

Ahi Tuna

Our waiter came and greeted us with a friendly smile, and asked if we would like flat or sparkly water for the table. We choose flat and he quickly brought us a bottle of Voss water and filled our goblets.

Portobella Mushroom Salad

Lamp Lollipops

Our wait was not long for the appetizers; Ahi Tuna Tartar, Grilled Lamb Lollipop and a Portobello Mushroom Salad. The Ahi Tuna Tartar came with avocado sauce that tasted so fresh and you could feel it melt in your mouth. Ditta, who is not usually a big fan of lamb, thought the lollipops were light and quite exceptional. The Portobello Salad tasted as great as it looked. All of them came with a very pretty presentation and were perfect portions to tease our appetites.

Organic Roasted Chicken

Beef Short Ribs

The entrees we had were Organic Grilled Rosemary Chicken with white wine and veal stock reduction and chili flaked sautéed kale on the side, Roasted Mahi Mahi with mushroom risotto and crispy shallots sprinkled on top, and their all-time best seller Slow Braised Beef Short Ribs with roasted potatoes, pearl onions and turnips. Lawrence and Ditta's favorite entree was the chicken dish, the adding of veal stock to the grilled chicken made it surprisingly delicious. Maria's favorite was the Mahi Mahi, the fish was cooked to perfection, and the risotto was just the right touch for this dish.

James Torme

Jazz music accompanied our dinner during the evening, though it was early, we got the chance to hear James Torme, run through parts of his songs, as he prepared to perform later in the evening. After the main course, as we were enjoying listening to the jazz trio, piano, bass and drum, jam together, we sipped some warm beverages; chamomile tea with honey, fresh mint tea, and warm water with lemon.

Pistachio Ice Cream and Lemon Custard

Anyone with a sweet tooth wouldn't pass up dessert, so for a perfect close to the dinner we had, a light and fresh Gluten Free Lemon Custard with Pistachio ice cream, Warm Chocolate Truffle cake that melted in your mouth with classic vanilla ice cream that gave a hot-cold tingling sensation, and crème de la crème of dessert, Crème Brulee topped with fresh berries.

It was a great night-out and as if the food was not enough, we got beautiful little bouquets of orchids and a box of chocolate to bring home in celebration of Lawrence's birthday.
