Fig & Olive Restaurant Review - The Picture-Perfect Newport Beach Restaurant

If you could steal a scene from a romantic movie and make it come to life, something so picturesque and beautiful would be a tall order. Recently opened Fig & Olive in Newport Beach has created such a setting, so breathtaking of a restaurant and setting it would almost make you forget how amazing the food is, almost.

Newport Beach has high standards and a crowd that is not easily impressed so you better do it right if you are going to enter the restaurant world in this ocean side community. The moment you walk into Fig & Olive you know this restaurant is special, from the amazing high ceilings that create a spacious and open feel, to the dining area that was created with perfectly trimmed white furnishing that creates an even more beautiful appearance as the sun brilliantly makes it through the windows. The best part is not even inside of Fig & Olive, make sure to make reservations for the patio so you can get a seat as this has quickly become the place to be in Newport Beach with the plush couches and fresh ocean air, this is how a weekend brunch was made to enjoyed.

Executive Chef Pascal Lorange put together a menu that encompasses the flavors of the Riviera and Coastal regions of the South of France, Italy and Spain. To showcase these regions Fig & Olive only cooks using olive oil and they have an assortment of 15 varieties at their disposal, each with a different flavor and use. You can only imagine if they are so thoughtful with olive oil that the rest of the menu is created with the utmost love. While the olive oil comes from all over the world, to make sure your food is as fresh as possible Fig & Olive creates a menu that focuses on local and seasonal ingredients.

Truffle Mushroom Fontina Scrambled Eggs

Every dish at Fig & Olive is full of flavor and ingredients that elevate it to a higher level than you would expect. This is so true of the assortment of crostinis that you can choose from and your best decision would be to get a selection of three or six to let you taste all of these incredible flavor combinations. While you will see that there is a crostini for every taste bud, the two that seemed to take you equally through the flavor gamut were the manchego, fig and marcona almond crostini and the bresaola, dolce gorgonzola and almond crostini. If you prefer just sampling the extraordinary variety of cheeses you can do that as well and you get to enjoy them with the exquisite fig jam.

Beef Carpaccio

The breakfast part of brunch for many is what they love the most and Fig & Olive with their unique organic egg creations will leave you longing for these to be served to you every morning they are so tasty. The truffle mushroom fontina scrambled eggs is just simply one of the best egg dishes you will ever have. No one flavor overwhelms this dish, but you get the subtleness of the cremini and black trumpet mushrooms, white truffle olive oil, fontina and scallion and they are prepared to so fluffy and soft that each bite is flawless.  In addition you will find crab cake eggs benedict and omelets that are taken from each region that the menu is based off of, the French, Italian omelets and the South of France poached eggs with salmon. If somehow these eggs aren’t tempting the restaurants Fig & Olive waffle is as good as you would expect with the restaurants name on it. A light and crisp waffle that if layered with fresh fruit and there is no syrup, instead you get a decadent mascarpone vanilla whipped cream to pour over the top. Whether you eat for breakfast or as a dessert, this dish will leave you happy.

If you are leaning a little more towards lunch, the beef Carpaccio is a great way to start and there is no question that you could put the Fig & Olive version up against any other restaurant. The beef is so tender you have to wonder it could just melt in your mouth and then it is topped with amazing 18 year old balsamic, thin slices of rich parmesan and then the addicting white truffle oil. Fig & Olive also tried their hand and at crab cakes and created another success.  There is no shortage of crab inside the crispy exterior and you will love the sweet pimento aioli that it is served upon, a rich combination of flavors to complete the dish. You can also find Riviera salmon, Spanish cod along with a raw bar and seafood in what is a well-rounded menu.

Crostini Trio

Fig & Olive is much more than brunch; the dinner menu is equally remarkable. One of the most unique dining experiences is to have a whole fish prepared table side. Not only will you get fish such as branzino or pink dorade, but it is a joy to watch as the Fig & Olive so delicately prepare it right in front of your eyes. Fig & Olive also created truffle risotto and primavera lobster risotto for their menu. Once again the depths of flavors are enormous and while risotto is a tough dish to prepare, if it is one of your favorites give one of the Fig & Olive versions a try.

Crab Cakes

 

Newport Beach has become the dining hotbed of Orange County and the restaurants keep coming so making that dining decision or choosing what restaurant is your favorite can be tough. After one visit to Fig & Olive you’ll find that much like its food it has everything you desire. Amazing food, a jaw-dropping restaurant and service that is impeccable.
