Revolving sushi bars seem to be a hot new trend in the world of sushi restaurants, and Blue C Sushi is the first in the Hollywood area. Located next to the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard, this Seattle import is a large, futuristic looking space with some clever design concepts.
Brightly lit with loads of color, a rotating belt carries prepared food such as sushi by each patron at the counter or table. You just pick up the plate, remove the cover, and indulge. After you finish just move the plate to the side and hang on to it as they will be collected later when its time to pay the bill. If you want waiter service however, it is available, especially if you sit at an outside table. And don’t worry about the food on the plates going stale. Each plate has an electronic chip inside so they know just how long it’s been on the belt and if it needs refreshing.
The theme at Blue C Sushi is based around the names of Tokyo’s major subway lines. If you’ve ever been to Tokyo, you will recognize names like “Ginza”, “Yurakucho”, and “Mita.”
These names are inside large colored rings in the front windows and the colors correspond to the colors on the outside edges of the plates on the belt. The colors tell you the price of the food on the plate and by looking up at the sidewall next to the bar you will see rings with prices inside them.
Another interesting design touch is a huge video screen on the back wall (its actually six smaller screens working together) showing a variety of images. You’ll see chefs in action preparing food and other interesting videos related to the business.
So now you’re ready for some food, right? If you just want a basic sushi meal you really don’t have to look at the menu. The plates on the belt show you exactly what you will get and the name of the dish is printed on the stand under each plate as well. California Roll, Tuna BLT Roll, Crispy Tofu Roll, Avocado Roll, and Salmon Skin Roll are just a few of the rolls available. Nigiri (rice with fish on top) include salmon, shrimp, yellowtail, and octopus. Gunkan choices include Crab Salad, Seaweed Salad, and Ikura. If you want to go “Beyond Sushi”, the menu has Chicken Katsu, Crispy Chicken Salad, and Crispy Shrimp. We tried a large variety of items on the belt and found them all to be very well prepared and tasty. We also tried the Uni Sashimi, sea urchin, and found it to be outstanding in taste and so tender it practically melted in our mouths.
There is much more at Blue C Sushi to try if you want to be adventurous. Signature Offerings include the Caesar Salad Roll, the Loaded Baked Potato, Spicy Tuna On Crispy Rice, and the Tuna Tostada. The chef can prepare something from the Raw Bar including combination plates, Black Tiger Shrimp, King Crab, and Live Sweet Prawns. Specialties “From The Kitchen” are Salmon Teriyaki, Crispy Calamari, and Smoked Yellowtail Tacos. The bar has specialty cocktails, sake, wines, beer, and the traditional Japanese Shochu. Don’t forget desserts, with Choco Pan pastry, Mochi Ice Cream, Cupcakes and Brownies on tap.
When you’ve finished your meal, a member of the wait staff will pickup the empty plates and total up your bill based on the colors. Needless to say, Blue C Sushi is a fun experience, not too expensive, and one you should try when in Hollywood.
