This place rules the giant boom of prohibition style bars that have been popping up, and when you walk in you will feel like you just stumbled upon an underground liquor bunker. Not quite a gatstropub like its sister restaurant The Local Peasant, Black Market is more of a speakeasy, which reaches out to and satisfies a more upscale crowd. Nestled snugly at the cross street of trendy and foodie, this spot is not to be missed.
The menu is filled with tapas and small plates with a twist. Deviled quail eggs anyone? I loved the blue crab stuffed zucchini flowers. They are crisply fried and seasoned to perfection, served atop a tomato reduction. These delicious golden trumpets played music to my tummy! One must also try the ricotta gnudi. Similar to their cousin gnocchi, but with a super soft texture unlike any pasta you’ve ever tasted, as they are made from cheese… (Yes, my mouth is watering as I write this). For those of you in the mood for more ”bar” style food selections, the sweet and spicy Korean wings will knock your socks off. I dare you to stop eating them. Crispy and spicy with the right amount of sauce, they are perfect for sharing.
Black Market is sexy, even handsome in a way. Could it be the brick and mortar? Perhaps it’s the stingy windows and the tinted doorway that insinuate the naughty. Whatever it is, you don’t want to be the one caught eating here alone, as it is a well documented fact that it’s much more fun to be naughty with company. Besides, the fun of eating tapas is the sharing! Boasting an ever rotating menu of both local and seasonal items, those lucky enough to find this hidden gem will be transported back to a time where boozing it up was illegal, but those willing to do a little digging would be rewarded with not only a wet whistle, but the whistle of satisfaction after having one of the best food and drink experiences ever.
Now for my favorite…dessert! They have a very nice spiced chocolate pudding and a few other things but after seeing the deep fried fluffer nutter, I didn’t pay much attention to anything else. Peanut butter. Banana. Marshmallow. On bread. Deep fried. Um…yea. I’m not even going to try and describe the flavor of this one. Just know that if you’re with the person you love most, they will become your enemy if they attempt to go for the last piece, so choose your company wisely. All this noshing and sharing is making me thirsty, how ‘bout you?
That brings us to the cocktails menu, no? My suggestions are these two. Ladies, go for the Fade to black. It is a bourbon based cocktail that is very grown up. No pink cosmos or blended frothy drinks with silly umbrellas will do. This is a beverage reserved for the woman who sits somewhere between Cleopatra and Aphrodite, sexy and rich... and best of all irresistible just like her. Gentlemen, reach for the Amber and Embers. This cocktail is a liquid version of a Cuban cigar… smoky, strong, and mysterious. I promise you’ve never tried anything that comes close. It is a power tie wrapped around a steak, with a side of CEO. It is a battle of wits in a board meeting, and believe me, only the strong will survive.
Black Market is best described as an iron fist in a black velvet glove. You never see it coming, but when it hits you, you’re down on the mat for 10, and believe me, you WILL fade to black. Normally I would give you the address, but searching for a speakeasy is half the fun. Cheers.
