Waffling on where to brunch? Well, for something a little different, you might wanna try Bru’s Wiffle to experience a variety of exotic waffles. They have traditional waffles too, but it’s the savories you’ll want to sample.
Ever thought to try a waffle topped with meatball marinara ($8)? ‚ÄėCourse not. But thanks to Ebru Fidan, we now have that opportunity‚Ķ.and one not to be missed. The marinara sauce is a family recipe, and the meatballs are fresh ground, not frozen.
Ebru and her brother Memo, who started Bru’s Wiffles in Santa Monica a couple of months ago, were fortunate to have been brought up in Istanbul with their parents who owned a popular hotel with a fabulous kitchen. That’s where Ebru learned her culinary skills. She discovered waffles from her many jaunts to Belgium over the years and decided when she and Momo moved to the U.S. that’s what they’d feature when they established their first eatery.
Bru’s is a bright, welcoming spot on Wilshire Blvd. with lemon colored walls and white-washed maple tables and chairs. On the walls: photos of the more unique dishes, a giant fork and spoon, an abacus….unusual items in keeping with an unusual menu. The room is simple, clean and family friendly. It’s only open for breakfast and lunch, since the Fidan’s found it difficult to sell waffles after 2 in the afternoon.
However when patrons discover that Waffle Sliders ($8.95) are every bit as tasty as the traditional, that may change. Their burgers are top quality fresh ground beef with only 15% fat content, never frozen, and the waffle ‚Äúbuns‚ÄĚ are less heavy then the usual burger buns. The batter is not as sweet as that used for breakfast waffles, so it‚Äôs not as strange a duet as you might expect. The batter is prepared fresh every day using shaved Madagascar vanilla and imported French or Irish butter.
Other menu items: Chicken Curry Salad Waffle ($7.50) and Chili Cheese Waffle ($7.50), and a Pizza Waffle ($7.50) topped with tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni, sauteed mushroom and onions. If you like a thick crusted pizza you’ll love this. For those who prefer a thin, more crispy crust, maybe not so much.
More breakfast friendly varieties are the A.M. Protein Waffle ($8.95) topped with chicken, cheese, mushrooms and onions and the Say What? ($8.95) with bacon, grapes and goat cheese. Each is either topped with or served with scrambled eggs. If this is just too much for your less than exotic palate, there’s always the Blueberry ($9.95) or Banana Pecan Waffle($7.95) or one of a half dozen salads, soups and sandwiches in the $7 range.
What I’m coming back for is Frank’s Favorite Ice Cream Waffle Sandwich ($6.50), similar to a French profiterole filled, with either vanilla, strawberry or green tea ice cream. Juices are fresh squeezed, and they use Illy for their coffee drinks. So if you just thought waffles could only be combined with fruit and nuts or maple syrup, you can now expand your culinary horizons.
