For generous breakfasts, simple brunch dishes, tasty pastas, sandwiches and entrees, you've come to the right place. La Belle Epoque has French flair and continental cuisine, but also manages to provide great basics and just plain good eats. The Los Feliz café also has something unique, true European sidewalk dining, as well as a French-style bakery offering a variety of cakes, pastries, croissants, breads and muffins, all baked fresh daily.
They've got all the breakfast staples; eggs, bacon and sausage, pancakes, potatoes and huge breakfast burritos. You can also order apple-smoked bacon, chicken sausage or fresh fruit along with your favorite breakfast traditions. If you are an omelette fan, you will be in heaven. All the regulars are here, with tasty additions like avocado and chicken sausage or the Greek omelette with tomato, feta and green pepper.
The extra brunch menu, available Saturday and Sunday until 5:30pm, offers other mouth-watering dishes like huevos rancheros served on a tostada with a side salad or eggs benedict with ham, spinach or asparagus, melting in your mouth. Try the puffed pastry with eggs, mushrooms and hollandaise sauce or various quiches, crepes and waffles. The brunch menu has some excellent choices, but is only available on the weekend. However, if you know what's on the brunch menu, and you ask very nicely, you can also request these dishes during the week.
There is also a wide variety of appetizers, soups and salads, including French favorites like escargot Bourguignon, traditional French onion soup, salad Niçoise (with tuna, green beans, boiled eggs, potatoes and asparagus) and assorted quiches. The warm and nourishing peasant lunch gives you a green salad, your choice of soup and fresh warm French bread. Sandwiches lean more towards California-style, with favorites like shrimp and avocado club, tuna melt, garden burger and mushroom, spinach and Swiss cheese. All are served on the bakery's freshly baked bread or croissant.
La Belle Epoque also offers a plethora of pastas, including all the basic favorites. The sauces are freshly made, the pasta is cooked to perfection and the restaurant's signature home-made bread is the only accompaniment needed. Entrees are typically French, including chicken, pork, fish and shrimp with traditional herbed sauces like Provencal, mustard or tarragon and mushroom. Any of these entrees will instantly transport you to the French countryside.
The wine list is charming, with mostly selections from California and France, and includes sparkling wines and dessert wines. Beer and espresso drinks are also available, and dessert consists of the many assorted pastries you can pick yourself from behind the glass. Just like at a French boulangerie. For a taste of France as well as superb basic breakfast, try a slice of La Belle Epoque and its shaded sidewalk dining. Vive La France!
