Il Cono gelateria was among the various charities present at this year’s Feast of San Gennaro, Aviva, Oasis and the Los Angeles Youth Network. The event was a true feast of pizza, pasta and, of course, dessert. While cannoli, Italian pastries, and biscotti were in abundance, there was just one thing suitable in this setting of gleeful Italian- Americans, Lena Prima fans and carnival festivities: gelato. Walking down the corridor of food, sights and smells, one could not help but stop at the largest display, a full rainbow of colors and flavors, the counter of Il Cono.
Il Cono is famous for being the only healthful gelateria in Los Angeles, and perhaps the world. Even Rome, a city in which it is virtually illegal to have less than one gelateria per block, doesn’t have anything quite like this wholesome store. Recently opened in Beverly Hills, Il Cono joins the ranks among Los Angeles’ favorite snackeries. Perhaps the draw comes from their use of authentic Italian mixing- machines and display cases. Unlike ice-cream, which can be thrown in the freezer, gelato must be kept slightly warmer, at 10 °C, requiring specialty coolers. Additionally, the gelateria keeps its confections characteristically smooth by eliminating components that typically make ice-cream hard, such as egg, butter and a high volume of air. The company prides itself on its use of traditional recipes, imported from Italy, which incorporate fresh produce, and local milk and cream.

Il Cono offers over thirty flavors of gelato , made fresh every day
|
Owner, Avi Morchy, a hunky Italian-American, bragged that not only does Il Cono make forty fresh flavors every day in house, including some in a new variety of non- fat frozen yogurt, but also offers classic espresso drinks and fresh squeezed juices. The local favorite? Carrot and celery!
If you are on a diet, but craving something a bit more sweet and creamy than veggie juice, you might want to check out Morchy’s concoctions made from Baby Yogurt,® an Italian style soft-serve yogurt with a distinct yogurt flavor. This dessert, cultured in the restaurant itself, is low-fat, low-calorie and low in sugar. A bit better tasting than traditional grocery store frozen yogurt, Baby Yogurt® contains all of the same health benefits found in high-calcium foods.

Il Cono's gelato is kept at just above freezing temperatures to maintain its silky smooth texture

However, the real draw of Morchy’s business is not in the health benefits of its juices or yogurt, but, of course, in the deliciously innovative gelato flavors. Ranging from authentic Italian tastes, such as ‘zuppa inglesa’ and ‘fior di latte,’ to oddities, like ‘rice’ and ‘rosewater, cardamom and saffron,’ Il Cono is sure to have something for everyone (For a complete list of flavors, see below).
