Totem Cirque du Soleil Review - A Night of Magic

I just experienced my first and hopefully not my last Cirque du Soleil show.  Their show Totem just opened in LA. It was absolutely breathtaking.  I'm sure that my jaw was dropped during most of the show. Some of the acts had me hoping they wouldn't miss a drop or slip off. The evening started in the tents where I got nachos and lemonade to enjoy during the show.  Each ticket was marked with a door to enter in, and as my friend and I made our way in we were greeted by friendly ushers who showed us to our seats.

Totem - Crystal Man

Our seats gave us the best possible view, in my opinion.  We were seated in the middle of the fourth row from the stage. The seating was separated into three sections and our section was in the middle.  As we sat and waited for the show to begin a few characters came out to entertain us. Spilling popcorn and having people change seats. These clowns could have kept the crowd engaged for a while, but as all things must begin eventually so did the show.

Totem- Bars (Carapace)

"Totem traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its  ultimate desire to fly. Inspired by myths it traces the evolution progress of species."  It was a mix of Darwin's theories and creation stories. It was as if all my Anthropology studies in college had just come to life.  The night opened with a big turtle shell that as a Silver creature came from the sky turned into a night with frogs. The frogs played on the bars as the magic began.

Totem - Fixed Trapeze

Now there were many highlights of the show but as to not give it away completely I’ll only name a few. During the fixed trapeze act a couple showed us an innocent game of seduction while magically and smoothly flipping through the air on one swing. One of the most amazing stunts they did was when the young man was hanging by his heels alone while dangling the girl beneath him.

Totem- Foot Juggling (Crystal Ladies)

The crystal ladies coming out of the fiery earth showed us their skills with spinning materials on their hands and feet and juggling them between each other as well as from foot to hand.

Totem - Unicycles and Bowls

To celebrate the harvest the unicycle ladies came out with bowls on their heads.  As they balanced on tall unicycles they also flipped metal bowls from one foot to their head and then to each others head.  They never missed.

Totem - Hand Balancing

The hand balancing act was a wonder.  With his strength and balance the artist was able to move around the hourglass shaped stand making it look as though his balance would be thrown off and the stand would tip, but with his strength he was able to keep the stand up right while he moved from side to side.

Totem - Roller Stakers

I don't wish to give away the whole show but one other act that was just amazing was the roller skating pair.  They spun on their skates on a tiny platform without flying off.  Just when we thought they had done all the tricks they could as the dance seemed to be ending they came out with another trick that was mind blowing. You'll have to see the show to find out what it was.

Overall the show was just incredible and I am so glad I saw Totem by Cirque Du Soleil.  Everything from the set to the live band and singers, to the costumes was just perfect and in sync.  It is a show that shouldn't be missed.  For those in LA get your tickets today!
