Last year I was delighted to Interview  Producers and Directors  Sasha Travis and Shawn Strider  to get the inside scoop about the incredible Labyrinth Masquerade Ball.  This year I wanted to know more about how all this amazing spectacle really started, and how it's put together.

I met Shawn Strider himself at Sypher Arts Studio, hidden amongst the Goblins and Fairies in North Hollywood.   What I learned I found fascinating.  In 1991 Sypher Arts Studio  was started by Shawn Strider, as a Comic Book Publisher, and very quickly became much more. It was like one of the old "Masons" clubs.  A place where artist of all ilk's came together to create.  They loved to tell stories, to produce works, to draw, write, design, build. And to Perform.

By 1997 Shawn Strider was visioning how to put all this amazing creative energy into an Event.  Sitting in a lounge in San Diego he struck up a conversation with a fellow who sat down beside him.  Shawn Strider started telling this "stranger" about all these artist, and all these stories, and about the enormous cadre of fantastical dreams he had.

A day or so later, this "stranger" rings up Shawn Strider on the telephone and out of the Blue Fairie Skye, tells him of this old warehouse he has, that would be perfect to put on an event. The thing was, it was literally dilapidated and boarded up by the Building Department.   But they agreed and within mere weeks the artist of Sypher Arts Studio had rebuilt the old warehouse building, cajoled the Building Department into allowing them to hold the Event which they couldn't yet describe, and viola, the first Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball was born.

Since then, its moved around. Even being held out of town, and out of State at times.  LOJ found a home at an old LA favorite, The Fonda Theatre. But the Sypher Art Studios Artists, and the gathering throngs, were soon overflowing with ideas and creativity, and needed a place to accommodate the ever expanding eclectic energy. It found such a home, still in Los Angeles, at the historic Park Plaza, across from MacArthur Park.  There are hundreds of Photos from last year's LOJ at the Park Plaza at my Facebook Page, Greg Autry Art & Photo.

The Labyrinth Masquerade Ball is a surrealistic fantasy which must be enjoyed in person by anyone who's ever dreamed or fantasized. If you have imagination and heart, if you dare to dream, then let yourself be Free.  For while there are amazing themes and stories, there are no restrictions, except that you be in costume, and that you let your creative  urges flow forth.

It takes a year of planning, a year of dreaming for over 400 artist, and 300 performers, to bring to Life what surely is the most magical event in a land of magic. Come to the Masquerade. Be who you really are.

The Labyrinth Masquerade Ball will be held July 4 and 5, 2014, at the Park Plaza in Los Angeles, California, USA.  Check the LOJ website , and get your tickets before it's too late.
