From DELTA DEEP to California: Feat. DEF LEPPARD and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Members.

If you ever wanted to know what would happen if the likes of Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan, performed with Led Zeppelin look no further than Delta Deep. The social conscious blues-rock-n-soul outfit is the brainchild of Def Leppard's Phil Collen. Pooling together the talents of singer Debbi Blackwell-Cook (formerly sang background vocals for Michael Buble, Gregory Hines), and musicians Rob DeLeo (bassist/Stone Temple Pilot), and Forrest Robinson (drummer/TLC, India.Arie, Engelbert Humperdinck).

Their sound goes back to the real roots of rock and soul, the blues. Drawing inspiration from classic Delta and Chicago blues, combined with a sexually charged, highly addictive rhythmic groove heard on the ferocious lead off track from the debut self-titled album. What also happened, is their self-titled album debuted at #2 on the iTunes Blues charts.

Although widely known for selling one hundred million albums worldwide with Def Leppard, Collen since childhood has also had an immense deep love and appreciation for blues, funk, and soul music. “Blues was created out of something completely different from what we hear today. I grew up listening to rock music but then I found out it was all based on blues. Jimmy Page, Hendrix, all of those guys, they got it from blues. Today’s musicians miss out on what blues is completely about. There’s a type of ‘blues style’ but not actual blues music. I just don’t hear true blues anymore unless I go back and listen to really old music.” With that reasoning, Phil decided to change the tide of what he was hearing. And thanks to the high voltage rock-n-soul voice of Debbi Blackwell-Cook, he was able to make his plan come to fruition.

In 2010, is when he first met Debbi. She performed at his (and wife Helen’s) wedding that year singing an acapella version of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘The Man I Love.’ After the wedding Debbi visited both of them in California and pretty soon Motown tunes and classic blues numbers could be heard around the house. Debbi would eventually sing on several Manraze releases including ‘I, Superbiker’ and ‘I Surrender’. The duo began performing live including performances at San Diego’s Gerson Institute, 95.5 KLOS’s Heidi & Frank radio show, and a television broadcast for UTV. They were soon joined by Forrest Robinson, a phenomenal drummer who has roots in heavy metal and played for The Crusaders, Joe Sample, TLC, and India Arie. Stone Temple Pilots’ bassist Robert DeLeo followed shortly after that, to complete the soulful quartet and lending his fiery and melodic bottom end sounds to the group’s diversified catalog. Which is basically for anyone who likes real music.
